I know this is back yard chickens, but I hope a turkey ? is ok.

they're just a week old probably and they're outside in warm weather for the day, with shade an water an food they love it but they peep incessantly sometimes. Loud shrill persistent non stop . when I go out to check on them the stop and I've sat there for like 25 mins no peeps out of them. , and when I go back in they start up.


are the lonely? are they looking for their momma?


why does the presence of someone stop the cheeping?


if the are lonely would a large toy in their presence make them not lonely?


I have one of them on my chest in the house right now, is it ok to hold one for a long time? say 20 mins? will It sstress the turkey? will the turkey like cuddling with me? its not struggling or shaking or nothing. it peeps a bit softly then stops.

They need to be kept warm and dry during their first few weeks. 90 degrees to start, then drop down 5 degrees or so every week. Try to harden them by week 4 or 5.

A wet cold poult is a dead poult.

If you handle them a lot, they will be fine if you are careful. They'll become as friendly as any other pet.

If they (poults) have a hen around, you should be better off. You will likely suffer more mortality than ones raised in a brooder, but I would think your birds would benefit from having a hen to mother them. Trade off.

The OP didn't state if there was a hen, just poults.

My dad got them from a feed store, they were incubator hatched. And they do come inside at night. Still to little to be out all night. Our days are beginning to reach 90 degree days according to my Dad. And they go in the shade when they want shade an in the sun when they want sun.

We have other chickens but they're all months ahead of these and have their own coop and their own group they're loyal too.

We have 45 dgrees and rain today. I would much prefer your weather. This is why my poults are inside in a brooder all day.

Sounds like you aren't in the States, or if so, you're somewhere pretty warm. Sounds like low temp shouldn't be an issue, and it is good you have shade.

Enjoy them. They are neat as they grow older.

I don't know where MsMoss lives but here in Southern California it is very warm/hot . It was 99 yesterday and today is supposed to be hotter.

Whenever I get down on the floor with my poults they love to climb all over me and get up on my shoulders and the bbw poults will even get up on top of my head. I have some poults that are about 2.5 weeks old and because the nights are pretty warm here I left the heating lamp off last night and everyone seems to be fine this morning. They have wing feathers and the month old ones are completely feathered out. The bbw poults are so much bigger than my heritage ones of the same age.
