i lost 38 baby chicks and i dont know how :[

i had 38 baby chicks in a wooden box in my garage with a nice strong wire mesh on top they were almost 3 weeks old and something had gotten in there a disease of some animal but i cant figure out what. they were all alive when i left work at 5am and got home at 5pm and they were all dead. it looked like there insides were popped out of there stomachs and bellies. i had a rabbit a while back and the same thing happened to him but he was outside. please help this mystery is driving insane
