This morning my little sister had gone outside and had noticed that some of the chicks where lose, so she rounded them up and when I got out there I told her it was time to move their Tractor.
I climbed in the run to get them out of the house and I noticed some blood on a plant in their pen, I open the door and move all the chicks out to their old brooder for a bit and part way through I notice some blood on the door. I'm getting worried at this point but we get them all out and I notice that all my pure EE are Gone!
My little sister notices that there is a trail behind the coop and I start fallowing it and I find some black feathers
and a little bit farther(sp) I find a pair of little yellow feet
at that point I was already crying and I just sit down and start bawling my eyes out.
My little sister after letting me cry for a bit had me go inside and call are mom and tell her what happened her Question was how many where gone , I told her that we had not counted yet. So I went back out and me and my sister carried them out to the adults coop and set them up so they can be in the run and come back into the coop to sleep (safe from the adults).
And I got my count we HAD 20 chicks, 2 where inside because one had broken its toe (my only pure EE chick left) and the other for company (leghorn-mix), we have 12 chick left outside plus the two inside total of 14, meaning 6 are missing/died
3 EEs, 1 WL-mix, and 2 black(or black and white) chicks are gone.
I have never lost a chick before, my first chickens last year I got 22 and am down to 18, 2 butchered (roos), 1 died of infection last fall (roo), and 1 pullet disappeared at about 18 weeks
My thoughts are that it was a coon because the trail looks like it was big (like the size of my beagle who is 30lds), and the way the Tractor was damaged the front wall looks like something got fingers in to the small crake (sp) and pulled it lose. Any thoughts?
I plain to sit out to night with my 22 and shot any predators that come around.
The only good thing is that I have 2 broodys who want eggs and I now have room to give them some
