Today is a very sad day for me. I lost my 1st hen that i had ever raised in my life today. Her name is Lil Girl and she was a Rhode Island Red. Having no clue about the safety of keeping my chickens locked in a coop/run i allowed my Lil girl to roam freely. Mind you i also have a white leghorn and a Costa Rica 🐔🐓... My rooster (whose name is rooster) has been with me since I moved into my house 8 years ago. He is a rescue rooster and sleeps very high up in a backyard tree. My Whiteleg horn hen named Blanquita i got 2 weeks after Lil girl. Blanquita also sleeps outside. Lil girl slept in the house in her own room. Her own roosting place and toys i only let her out during the day and she would come home on her own at sundown well today i prepare a snack for all 3 of my birds and head outside to go feed them grapes (fav fruit of all 3). I get outside and walk over to their favorite sitting place ( a bush in front of my neighbors house) everybody loves my birds. When i get to the bush i can't find lil girl but i find rooster on a low branch in the bush and Blanquita sitting peacefully under him. I'm calling for Lil girl and usually she comes running. Well not today. My neighbor walks out and tells me she got hit and killed by a car today and the landlord threw her in the garbage. So i got her out of the garbage and buried her. Saying all this I'm saying now i know how important it is to keep a coop/run for your hens especially living on a busy street. Also I have a question i buried Lil girl 3 ft deep in the ground is that to shallow?

I like to cover any graves with a stone slab for a few weeks, as I have had coyotes and other predators dig them up. If you don't have predators of that sort, you are probably safe though. 3 feet is pretty deep. Sorry that you lost her. She sounded like a great girl.

I am so sorry for your loss. Sounds like she was a great girl and well loved. When I have to bury my hens, I always cover the grave with some kind of slab, even if it's just some big stepping stones.

Grapes are also my chickens' favorite treat. Hope you can keep everyone else safe.

It's good to meet you, sorry it had to be under sad circumstances.

I'm so sorry for you and Lil Girl. Take some comfort in the fact that she had a wonderful life with you. I mean, how many chickens get their own rooms?

My yard is fenced to 4', and they can easily fly over. I added 2' of chicken wire so they can't go visit the neighbors across the street, but free range always has dangers, including hawks for me. There's always a trade-off between safety and freedom, even for us.
