I lost one of my girls this morning..

Yesterday morning I noticed Zazu was standing with her tail down and a bit fluffed up, so I started the egg binding steps. After I had her inside and she laid her egg I noticed she still wasn’t acting right. I set up a space for her in my laundry room with quiet and warmth and gave her some tums. I gave her an Epsom salt soak about every two hours. I woke this morning and she had passed sometime last night. Even writing that has me tearing up, I even told my husband I don’t think I should have gotten any chickens. I get too attached and it is so emotional to lose one, esp after raising her from a day old chick. I didn’t know how to help her and that makes it even harder.
The egg she laid yesterday was in the fridge and my Phoenix has been broody for about 4 days now, so I put Zazu’s egg under her. Do you think it will hatch after being in the fridge for almost 24 hours? I didn’t wash off the bloom. I’m just really hoping to at least get her baby from this egg!

Condolences on your loss. Zazu was a lovely girl.

If the egg is fertile, refrigerating it for a short period (like 24 hours) shouldn't stop it from developing under a committed broody. I recently incubated a bunch of eggs that had been washed (and some refrigerated) and had a very good hatch rate. Best of luck!

My condolences for the loss of your beautiful Zazu.
I have read of people successfully incubating fertile eggs from Whole Foods. No telling how long they were in refrigerated storage. (If true)

Sounds like Zazu got lucky with the home she received. You took wonderful care of her. Every living creature should feel loved and cared for as they leave their life. Good luck with her egg!
