One of my very favorite breeds. Tied with Rhode Island Reds for me. I think they just make the nicest pets and are so sweet. My mother in law had one named Sweetie because she was so sweet. It's a loooooong story as to why she ended up with just 1 hen but Sweeties best friend was my mother in laws lab Missy. They used to sleep together on Missy's dog bed.
I was thinking that the reason the BRs are so friendly is because the are the most curious and brave in the brooder. Mine come up to check me out everytime I go in and thye are the first to take a new treat. Therefore they get held more than the chicks that are harder to catch. P.S. My faves!
Yes! I think they are one of the the prettier breeds. My 3 are also friendlier than my Buff Orps, EEs and Wyandottes, dunno if it's the breed that is friendlier or just the ones I have though
I have 7 BR hens that are the best! They lay very reliably, are personable with me, and have good "flock manners." I wouldn't think my flock was complete without BRs.
I had hatchery Barred Rocks and I really didn't like them. The hens pecked at me when I was gathering eggs and the roosters got loose after a tornado took out part of the coop and kept attacking my kids (who were 5 and 7 at the time). I like Buff Orpingtons ans Speckled Sussex a lot better.
