I Love 'Em, but... How Was Your Chicken Day?

My Chicken day started with one of the 3 week old chicks jumping out of the brooder and peeping it's head off. What a way to wake up. I had the jury rig a top so the rest could not do the same thing.

I woke up and a went out in the shop and looked at my 70 chicks and I smiled! Then I filled up the 2 feeders and waterers and checked the bator temp and it was 98.8 and holding steady. Then I went to work and it was a hot dry day for Lawn Care and Landscaping. Other than that great productive day at work!

I would switch back to shavings if I were you. Hope that will help.

Where did you get your sand? Sounds like it came with a horrid smell. Add poop and... BLECH!

I only have a few chicks, so am able to buy the bagged all purpose sand, which must be cleaned somehow because it doesn't smell at all.

What a day! Ugh. Watch some chick TV for therapy... with a gas mask on

It was play sand - washed and dried.
Oh well, it's gone now! Back to the fresh scent of pine! I opened the brooder up for the larger birds. While I was cleaning the sand out, I noticed there are a lot of feathers floating around, and some of my chicks feathers come out easily while petting them. A molt? Why just the backs? They are 3 and 4 weeks old. Maybe the sand dried out their skin? Or made them itchy? I dunno, but I hope the space and the shavings help settle them down.
