I Made A Feeder and A Waterer

I made a no-waste chick feeder and a horizontal nipple waterer today.

The feeder is a coffee can with three 1.5" PVC elbows. The waterer is a bucket I picked up at work that contained marinated mushrooms -- as a deli clerk I have a near inexhaustible supply of food-grade plastic containers in 2qt to 5 gallon size.

Teriyaki, the Blue Australorp in front, had already pecked at one of the nipples when I left them.

I can't access my photo of the feeder because I use Discord to get things from my phone to my computer and it's gone down at the moment. I'll post it as soon as I have access again.

Here it is.

I hope it works because the chicks dumped half their food out of the chick feeder into a pile beside it today.

Of course I'll have double feeder and double waterer in place for a while as they get used to them.

I found the designs here on this site.

It might not be visible in the picture, but since the lid of the bucket is airtight I put a tiny hole in just under the rim to allow air pressure to equalize as the water level goes down.

P.S. The waterer is approximately 1 gallon.

I wouldn't want anything bigger without a carrying/hanging handle. It's awkward holding it in two hands while I walk across the yard.

I also intend to make larger equipment as the chicks grow.

The nipples are Rentacoop, from Amazon.com. I followed the suggestion in one of the reviews by hand-tightening them instead of using the drill attachment. Apparently drills can be too powerful and end up cracking the container.

Nice job on the builds!
You might be able to raise the waterer another brick, keep it about beak height for them.
Did you cut the elbows down for the feeder? Are they able to reach all the way down to get the feed?
When I made my chick feeder I cut the elbow to shorten it. Other wise they wouldn't reach the feed. I used 1.5 inch elbows as well.
