I get home from work last night, and go over to see my parents, and my dad starts asking me about what we are feeding our ducklings, and a bunch of other questions about them, which I thought was somewhat odd, since he never really showed much interest in them till yesterday... turns out that one of his coworkers bought 10 rouens(supposedly rouens, we will have to see) at TSC 3 weeks ago(I am guessing as easter gifts, from the timing), and realized last week that they were a bit too much for him to handle and ended up selling them to my dad for $5 each… I think my dad said he is picking them up this weekend... now, with all the stuff I have managed to learn about ducks that I have been able to tell him, and all the stuff he has managed to look up himself, he has become pretty interested in ducks... I guess he is planning on getting a few cambells for eggs, too… now if I can just convince him to let my GF and I do geese on the farm...

Geese are the most funtastic "guard dogs"

I hope you're able to get your geese too! I do however want to point out that geese are not guards, they are alarms. I've lost geese to predators out in the pastures, and I've lost ducks to predators who were with geese.

And I've had would-be burglars chased off the property by geese; hence my "guard dog" comment

well, my dad picked them up yesterday... only got 7(three died the night before, my guess after looking at the ones he got is malnutrition... but they are in good hands now)... they look a little older than 3 weeks too... maybe 4... and it was confirmed by the guys wife(who is the one that bought them) that the sign at TSC said rouens... they all looked to have at least a partial second bar under the eye, too...

So what does the second bar under the eye mean?

Missy 2 eye stripes are Rouens 1 are mallards

Geese scare humans, because humans for the most part all have a mean goose story and think they are evil if they haven't been around the calmer breeds.

Geese won't protect ducks or chickens from anything 2 or 4 legged. They will alarm about things, they will alarm about nothing too. Roosters spend more time monitoring and alerting for concerns. Our geese act like the other animals on the property are below them and not worth their time.
