I may need to cull all the quail lab results #32

Farrier -
I read the posts and am interested in what the state vet says.
Sorry for the loss of your babies. You mentioned that they are in the house. I know that some time has passed since this was first posted, but can you remember if you or someone in the house may have been cooking with "Non-Stick" cookware? If non-stick cookware (teflon) gets heated too much, then it gives off a gas that is deadly to birds. Could that be a possibility in your case?

No teflon, but that was a good thought. Also the deaths were over a 72 hour period.

The Mexican Speckled shipped quail eggs that were in the incubator at the same time are now hatched. 8 out of 10 hatched, one with help that was late and later died. All 7 doing fine now.

I have my 65.00 dollar results back.....

MORPHOLOGIC DIAGNOSIS:
No significant gross or microscopic alternations except for mild fatty changes in the livers of two of the birds.

Mild postmortem changes in intestines of two birds.

COMMENTS:

Inflammatory reactions and infectious diseases are not recognized. Intestinal postmortem changes compromised the diagnostic effort in the intestines of the two birds. The fatty changes are nonspecific and may be associated with a brief period of anorexia. Parasites and protozoa are not evident.

A metabolic or nutritional disorder could not be ruled out.

anorexia may be the reason for fatty liver? If so that's just how it is with cats if they stop eating.

However it's very odd to me that they cannot find the cause for this possible anorexia that caused the fatty liver in those two.... maybe the food was bad. Did they test for poisons in the feed i didn't see that mentioned.

as you well know coturnix are HOGS...lol so for them to stop eating to get anorexia to cause the fatty liver something icky had to of happened....and if they can't find a disease or whatever makes me think something with the feed...bad feed, moldy feed etc.

I lost two batches the same way. Mine problem was a bag of feed. I started the nxt bag of feed with three quail left on the second batch. The three quickly recovered. The new bag of feed was the same brand bought on the same day. I did not notice it on my older birds but their egg production had to almost 1 eggs per day per 2 birds on first bag of feed. Upon starting second bag egg production went back up to 1 egg per bird per day within 3 days.

when I bred rabbits bad feed was the main reason for rabbitrys failing, one bag of moldy feed had rabbits dropping like flies...just like bad dog and cat feed had them severely ill and dieing with in days of eating the tainted feed. So I would not be suprised if baby quail couldn't handle toxins that maybe older quail can handle. I'm sure that with other animal feeds that poultry feed is also ignored on what all exactly goes into it. A deffinate shame but not everyone can make their own feed (grow it know where it came from what went into it, how it was harvested and how it was processed) so we are at the mercy of the feed producers

Fatty livers on only 12-48 hour old quail is really odd still ....

Anorexia in chicks so young could maybe be caused by excessive bleeding at hatch time?? Idk about the fatty liver though. At least they don't have anything contagious!!

They looked and acted fine until they started to go neurological.

After reading JJMR794's comments about refrigerated eggs I am curious if that happened to mine. I had a 90%+ hatch rate but then all the deaths within 72 hours.

So....I feel at this time it was a bad bag of feed or refrigerated eggs. The fact that the speckled quail hatched well with no neurological problems leads me to believe it is something that happened with just those eggs. The problem hatch were not shipped but picked up locally.
