I met my first North American!

Actually, all of you have forgotten about the famous "valley girl" accent. (One that i'm afraid many southern californians - not just in the valley, have)

Thankfully I live in the high desert of So. CA, where we have a down-south / CA accent...much different than the coastal areas. When I go down the areas, I really notice the "valley girl" accent.

I guess, it is 'cause the high desert is a bit redneck compared to those areas!

There's the surfer accent too, though that doesn't seem to be as common anymore.

edited to add: I say "ya'll", not "like".

I don't think I have an accent.

Of course, I'm not a good judge since I've lived my whole life hearing my voice.

I'm originally from New Hampshire, moved to Germany where I lived til I was 12, then down here to very South Alabama. Folks ask me all the time where I'm from. I notice when I'm around folks who are from here that I have a southern drawl but when at work talking to customers on the phone I don't have it.

My dad's dad and Grandmother were German and growing up they didn't speak English, they spoke German, growing up in my household especially overseas, we spoke both English and German and my folks still do. My Gramps never lost his New England accent and always said bah (bar), cah (car), Yahd (yard) etc. My mom talks like that when she's tired.

Accents are so neat and so varied.

I found it so intriguing that when we moved to the states after having been overseas that people thought I sounded "foreign". I was like uh...I speak English just like you guys do

I geuss it depends on where you live. Like us Afrikaans/English speaking Transvaalies have a accent compared to the Cape-tonians.
