I met my wounded Soldier

How do they select the soldiers? Are these people who do not have families or anyone who sends them items from home?

Quote:
Soldiers can submit themselves for adoption. Often they are submitted by a friend or family member or even another soldier who thinks they need some extra support or notices they don't get much mail.

No deployed hero is turned away. I've found that most of the ones I've adopted were submitted by another soldier or their commanding officer who noticed they didn't get much or no mail.

I cheated. I saw on a thread where another BYC member has family serving, and the family member mentioned some other soldiers not getting anything. I asked if a name could be shared and it was! So DD2 and I sent a box full of Christmas-type food and candies, a scarf, a stuffed bear, a hand-drawn card from DD2 and a Christmas card from me to the soldier.

It's a nice feeling at Christmas to give with no thought for gain, and I really enjoyed it, as did my daughter.

AussieSharon, I can only imagine how good it felt for you to meet the person you adopted. Amazing!

DD2 sent Nelson one of her drawings with my Christmas card for him. She's really enjoyed having a new audience for her artwork, even if she never hears back from any of them! (Although she was a bit disgusted about her dove of peace turned out on Nelson's card!)

Let me tell you Nelson was thrilled. The look on his face said it all. I sat there as he read every single word on each card and letter. He LOVED the drawings from the kids and was smiling from ear to ear.

I've heard heroes say time after time that they love all the mail they get but their favorite is always something a kid does.

It really is a great feeling and one of the best things I've ever done was to join Soldiers Angels ( and BYC of course! )

Wow AussieSharon! Sounds like you had fun! Did you get to see BAMC our famous Trauma Hospital, and number one Burn unit? I love Fort Sam, I actually live 5 minutes or so from there! I am happy you got to see the Alamo!

Lanissa I didn't but would have loved too. I'm sure if Nelson had known I was coming he could have organized for me to have a tour of the place. We were outside with the party for Fisher House residents. Fort Sam looked incredible, it would have been amazing to see more.

I did see a medivac helecopter landing and an ambulance there waiting.

Well Darling, I for one applaud you for the wonderful voluntary work you are doing for the USA soliders serving their country, as one of our greatest allies in everything - BRAVO - and thank you to everyone who sent a card to Nelson......We are blessed to have members such as yourself..the unsung heros of the war who do their bit to keep up a soliers morale.......STANDING OVATION to you Aussiesharon from me xxxxxx

aww thank you, I'm blushing but really what I do is nothing compared to these men and women. It was such a humbling experience. The gentleman who picked me up from the airport had been wounded also. He was shot in the back and fell 50 feet. It's amazing that he was alive, nevermind walking.

This really was my Christmas present early.
