I might not be able to wait...added question #3

Hey Glenda!
The coop is completely ready and fencing will be soon. The neighbor doing the fencing for the yard is just waiting for the ground to dry enough to sink the posts.

I'm not in the burbs, but close - all around me are small acreages like mine - most 5-10ac. But just down the road from me are 4 new subdivisions!

And Spring here is still on the cool side - suppose to hit 80 this weekend, but now it is 60, cooler at night.
We don't get really warm until late June or July.

I may end up waiting anyhow - just talked to the Lowell auctiuon people - the poultry auction doesn't start un til 10P!
Of course I may go to dinner first - there's a great Mexican place nearby - then windowshop some poultry. Maybe someone will sell me some Pity Hens before they open...

Hmmm...Margarita before shopping for chickens - perhaps not the best idea?

I moved some full grown ones in a laundry basket covered with a sheet and bungeed to hold in place. They never moved. Enjoy your fresh eggs!

Hi there fellow Hoosier.

My Dad goes to the Lowell auction often. I've never been there myself. Did I read that correctly, "the poultry doesn't start selling until 10:00 pm" That doesn't sound right to me from hearing about the auction. That sure is late.

I'm not sure where you are located, but I wanted to ask if you were familiar with the auction every Monday in Walkerton. They usually have chickens. We haven't been there for a couple of weeks, but the last 2 times we went there were several chickens, chicks, ducks, rabbits, turkeys, rabbits...... Sorry, I don't remember breeds as I was just browsing, not buying. I think the animals start selling at 5:00. Let me know if you want more info.

Transporting won't be a problem for ya.

...and if you need to spend the night somewhere with chicks...a stop at tsc for a light, waterer and starter. Arrive at hotel and just know these chicks have never peeped so loud before. Enter room to find walls are made of construction paper because you can hear the folks next door. Remove drawer from a dresser, line with assorted plastic bags and news papers. Put in chicks and other purchases. chicks are happy and continue to peep louder and louder...morning does arrive.

This was my weekend last week after an unplanned silkie purchase while in NC.

Enjoy your chickens.

If you could hotel stay with hens it would be a better story.

Yup - I asked the woman who answered the phone twice & she said 10P. I think the auction starts at 7P, but maybe they sell the large stock (horses, cows, etc) first? If you could ask your Dad I'd sure appreciate hearing different.
Walkerton is a bit far for me, I'm right outside of Crown Point so Lowell is just "down the road".

Love your story about the Stealth Chicks!
I'm only 1/2hr from home if I go to Lowell so I won't need to get the hens a room...but it would make a good story...

Hey 2DogsFarm, I checked with my Dad on the Lowell auction. He hasn't been there for awhile due to health reasons, but he gave me the info he knows. It's on Mondays with the poultry starting at 10:00 in the morning. He said things could have changed in the last couple of months, but that's how it was.

So, I'm probably not much help. Sorry. Hope you find what you are looking for.

BTW, I went to a flea market today and one of the ladies works at the Walkerton auction I mentioned. She said that chickens - hens and roosters - were going for as much as $15 each. Geez, almost can't afford a chicken these days. Well, I actually I couldn't for that price.
The eggs there have been going for 80 cents to $1.25 a dozen. With the prices of laying hens I would think the eggs prices would be bringing more.

Let us know how it works out for you.

10A makes a heckuva lot more sense.
I may be {coughcough} sick next Monday and skip work to go to see what they have
