I've raised a total of 3, so I wouldn't exactly call myself an expert. ;)

Are you worried Pru is a cockerel? There's no need to panic quite yet, as they're still youngsters. :) While BR male plumage usually appears lighter than that of pullets due to the double barring gene, a few females also feather out with an amount of white that could tend to confuse.

Here's an example from my own flock:

Pru is my 3rd BR, but the other 2 are only 20 weeks. Sophia is very dark, and Dorothy is lighter. Where I live, I cannot have roosters. So I’m getting very concerned

Very pretty girls. :love

It's very understandable you'd be apprehensive under those conditions. :hmm As hard as it is to be patient, I think you'll have to wait this one out a little longer. In another couple weeks, we should have a better idea. :)

This is Prudence. Again. Her feathers are coming in so very white. Anyone have any thoughts?

Can you hold you bird on your palm and out stretch its wings? While I agree some hen BRs are lighter NONE have the double barring gene and I would know that because my great grandfather and grandfather sold BRs as a breed and we sexed chicks at hatch with over 90% guarantee. While he no longer does it in as large a scale as he did I still find it easy to see the breed within a few weeks of hatch, if they were iffy at a day old. I guess this is only because I was raised around the breed from a toddler. You're photos seem a little blurry. Blurry photos make barring skewed so the cleanest photos are best. Like I was mentioning hold out the birds wings and compare it to the photos I post below. Maybe that'll help. Best of c'luck :)

I'll add in a couple photos of a five week old cockerel and pullet.

Imma go with pullet.
I'd see much crisper lines on cockerell. She's very light I'll give the bird that!but at 4 weeks the comb should have at least a little development.
If you want post more images in about a week. If this is a Male chick it should be a little more obvious within the next week or two!

Above is an image of my blue bared cockerel at 3 days!
