I must be a monster

To OP: I see nothing wrong with you eating your birds. I am a vegetarian because of my feelings about the meat industry and because I am too much of a wimp to kill anything. What amazes me is not the vegetarians that see something wrong with it (at least they are being consistent), but people who are perfectly willing to call you a monster for eating a well treated animal while they go to their supermarket and pick out a package of big business chicken.

I also had a friend who worried about fertilized eggs (she is considering getting a roo), but after I explained that the difference is in one cell and that they don't develop until incubated she was fine with it. Some people just don't understand about chicken embryonic development and how it works.

Well put! We have 6 hens and 49 chicks in the brooder (straight run). Aside from a couple (or 3) roos that we will keep ourselves, the rest of the roos will be dinner. I feel bad, but I would rather know where my meat came from. Some people are hypocrits and are not worth our energy. Let them think you are a monster while they eat commercial-raised chicken.

I'll admit that I could never eat any of my chickens but I keep a smaller flock and me and my wife tend to get attached to them. I would also rather buy processed chicken then do it myself. But these are your chickens and for your purposes. Ask the people that call you a monster to start a chicken rescue where you will happily donate some that you were planning to eat and then see what their opinion is. I tend not to ask to many questions when I sell my extra roos but know not to get attached as we cant keep them all for the poor hens sake. I'm not ignorant but would rather not know if they get processed.

Rise above their comments...... your have no reason to let them get under your skin...... what better way to eat meat than to raise your own..... we eat our own lamb and beef also.... so good luck to you and happy healthy eating....
