I must be a relic. A low level rant.

I must be a relic from the past. I just don't know what to think about peoples' work ethic of today. Employees coming into work with wet hair. Clock in and eat breakfast. Deal with clients as they eat with wet, uncombed hair. One employee reeks of marijuana after lunch. The odor is so strong I get the munchies. Other employees calling in saying they are too tired to work or I forgot to put gas in the car or I didn't set the alarm.

When I mentioned the lack of well....just good ethics....the office manager said she didn't see anything wrong with dealing with folks while hair is wet and uncombed. I just blinked at her.

So maybe I'm old fashioned. I'm sorry but I'm arriving at work ready to...get to work! I'm not letting a client seeing me with wet hair or food hanging out of my mouth. Or a massive rats nest in the back of my head. Instead I will be ready to go to work and look like I'm ready to get the job done.

The only thing you'll see coming out of my mouth are the words, 'Good Morning! How may I help you?'

Oh and you are so not by yourself. Add to that talking on the phone while you are working. Personal phone calls, not related to business. Erks my hiney for sure. I finally asked a young girl in the drugstore if she would please put the phone down for a second...I had a question. She did. Answered my question and promptly picked it back up.

When I was manager of McDonald's an adult co-worker called in because she had to do laundry. Our store manager (who was in his late 20s and was dating a 17 yr old girl) used to constantly come in an hour late, fix his time on the computer and promptly go to the office and spend 9 hours on the phone and then yell at us because a busload of till customers held up our drive-thru. I was so happy when I quit. Even though teaching is stressful, it is far less so than working for him!

I do sometimes arrive at work with wet hair although I do crank the heat on my way in, so it's mostly just "damp." My hair is so long and thick it takes a long time to dry anyway. Sometimes, I'll braid it wet and tie it in a club and it'll hold for 3 days like that and still be slightly damp when I undo it. Although in my defense I have chickens, a horse, dog and husband that smokes. I think my students would prefer me to smell like shampoo than chickens

That being said, some of my students (middle schoolers) get that ripe adolescent smell

Oh I know I hate the telephone bit. You are standing there, waiting wanting to pay for your gas and they are having a personal conversation like they are at home.

I get a little ugly about it. And I agree when it is time to start work, it is time to start work.

In my defense, it's either because I'm waiting for my hair to dry naturally for the "style" or because I have it in a hair tie and nobody will see it anyway.

I don't eat breakfast...and I smell the munchies with you.

if you're a relic from the past for thinking like that then i must be too and i'm in the first half of my thirties. honestly some of the excuses and behaviour from people not much younger than me i've worked with is ridiculous. coming into work hungover and/or slightly drunk is one that really gets me. couldn't believe how my last manager used to tolerate it, when i was a supervisor i'd have sent people home on the spot with no pay for being in no fit state to work. it's dangerous to themselves and the people they are around. this guy though used to just give them easier tasks and have a laugh with them about it. in the mean time the rest of us who were sensible enough to not go out and get drunk every payday would end up doing extra work. drove me nuts. i left in disgust for quite a few reasons from there.

so yeah you're not the only one. my fiancée who is my age is dealing with the same thing at the shop she manages too.

Clocking in means you're ready to work... not gossip, not do your hair/makeup, not eat breakfast... WORK.

Seems simple enough to me.
