I was the meanest office manager ever. I raked everyone, including my boss and myself, over the coals. My boss bailed out on me one day, when we had some serious stuff going on. I went to his house, very politely busted him reading on his back porch and said sign these papers, please. Left, filed the papers. Called him that night and said I am taking next Monday as a Mental Health Day and btw, I gave myself a raise today.

All he said was okay, thank you.

I should add that this is the same boss I bailed out of jail one night - he'd been arrested for not cleaning his vacant lot.

I'm a bit confused here Ranchhand. What is a mental Health Day? What is a vacant lot? I think it might be a piece of land, but how could anybody be put in jail for not cleaning it?

i totatly understand your low level rant.

people at my work, arrive when they "can". come to work, sometimes smelling like liquor. (awful to work besides them)!

THen while they too are clocking in, they are putting make up on (way toooo much)!!!

the work field is not like it used to be. no matter what the job. Some people just dont care.

A mental health day is a day you take off to prevent you from going postal. Think of it as a 'save your sanity' day.

We employ tech students at our clinic. One likes to call in frequently. His excuse one night was that he had to study for a test (even though he had had the previous night off, yet elected to party instead of study). Got really mad when we gave him grief about it the next day (we were really busy and had to call in the on-call to cover for him.)

First thing I'm going to say is "I'm sorry!" Why? Because some of you will not like what I am going to say.

Now...

The things you are all relating here are going on all over the country, and all age groups and ethnicities are involved. And these actions are part of the reason that people all over the world think that Americans are spoiled, inconsiderate brats. The image of Americans has become tarnished everywhere, and it's because we (generalization) are seen as having a bad attitude. In so many cases it's true, many Americans do have a bad attitude and sense of entitlement. Get over it! Take responsibility for yourselves, and for your actions.

These things are also the reason that this country is having a hard time with illegal immigration. If the employers here can't find workers that will help them to advance in their business, they will hire people who will do the jobs they ask them to do without complaining. If someone shows up at the door of the business and begs for a job, and then does it to the best of their ability, why wouldn't the boss keep his/her mouth shut about a lack of legal paperwork? And then we can complain that these people took our jobs. Yes, they did. How to keep that from happening? Everyone do your job to the best of your ability so no one would need to hire someone else.

Okay, to be honest, I am in total agreement with the OP and all the other responders to this thread, and hate to see what's happening in the workplace. I too grew up in an era where the work ethic was all important. Employers have to stop being afraid of their employees and start making and keeping good workplace policy.

Hey, I come to work with *damp* hair from time to time, but I am on time, CLEAN, and abide by the dress code. I do not eat while talking to patients, and I pick up extra shifts when I can (in the ER). I am proud of my work ethic, I've had a job since I was 14 (with the exception of one summer).

Damp hair or not, I work and pay taxes, too, darn it!

I just recently started working at a sub shop part time to make ends meet, as Dh just got laid off for the winter. Its a family owned sub shop and its really busy in there so the employees eat when they can in the back whenever they get a free moment. the boss and the managers are really good to the employees but I am quite sure if we ate in front of the customers the owner would have a cow and a half. we are not allowed to chew gum either and we get in trouble if we do not greet the customer within the first 15 seconds of that customer entering through the door. the day shifts are all adults, one of them is always on her cell texting, she gets told all the time to put it away and just yesterday the owner told her to go home since she cannot seem to put her cell down it must mean it is more important than being at work doing her job and earning her wages.

during the evening its all students between the ages of 15 and 18 and out of the 7 employed. 5 are so mature for their ages, nice and well put together teenagers who have very good work ethics. 2 of them however stand around doing nothing, eating by the cash register, chewing gum, forgetting to wash their hands and/or talking on the phone constantly. these 2 girls were working yesterday and it was funny to see a 17 yr old girl (another employee) tell them to stop standing around, put the phone down, throw the gum away, wash your hands and now you are on dish duty. I was the oldest there. and I found this amusing.

I stayed late yesterday and had to drive home in a blizzard, if I had left when I was supposed to I would have missed all that.

you are definitely not a relic, lol, some people just really lack management skills, or simply just don't care enough.

At my old job, I had an employee call in for her 7 am shift at 630 am and tell me she had been up all night and couldn't come in because she ACCIDENTALLY got SMASHED while out with her friends. I called the manager and told her the exact same thing the employee told me. The manager ended having to come in to work her shift. That same employee used that exact excuse several more times and nothing ever happened to her. the last winter I was employed there, my DD came down with a double lung infection and was hospitalized, I called in and told them I couldn't go in because my daughter was in the hospital, I gave them 12 hours of notice to replace me. I spoke with the manager. In any event when I returned to work I was written up for not coming in for my scheduled shift. I was dumbfounded. I told the manager, one day you will have children, and I hope what you just did to me happens to you. I quit that job a couple months later , when that other employee came in to work drunk and stoned, and then said well I cannot stay cause I do not feel good and left. the manager refused to send anyone to replace her and demanded I stay a double shift. I had already worked 14 hours, so I grabbed all my stuff, called the operations managers on duty in the plant and told him, that according to law and company policy I could no longer be on site because I had worked my max hours. I left. BTW I worked in a mine, so they have very strict rules about the max hours worked. the manager got in a lot of trouble over this. and more so when I told the company was I would not return to work.
