My rooster and i are NOT friends-aquaintences-or any other good relationship. My sister and my dad are like his best friends but me and my mom always get attacked when we go outside. once, he even chased me around my house 3 TIMES!! i've tried kicking him in the face when he jumps at me and gives me bruises with his spurs, but it just makes him madder. does anyone know how i can patch up my horrible relationship with my rooster?:) i sure hope so.

Thx;)

Hey Chickwit,

I can't imagine kicking him in the face will help but, who am i to judge...

Our fist chickens (the Cream Crested Legbar sisters) HATED us when we first got them. I spent hours trying to stroke them or pick them up, but to no avail... One day when i was feeding my Beardie, i dropped one of the mealworms on the windowsill, and it crawled out the window and dropped onto the floor. Later, when i let the chickens out to free range, they rushed straight over and one of them ate the mealworm in one gulp. So i tried dropping another one...and the same happened. The answer: THEY LOVE MEALWORMS. But they like MORIOWORMS much more because they are bigger. If you have a Pets At Home or any reptile shops near you, you can buy them for about £2.50 a pack. But if your not willing to give your Rooster live food, don't give him dried mealworms (I don't know why but chickens just don't like them) try dropping other food in front of him, see what he likes.eventually, after you have dropped food in front of him a few times, he should start eating out of your hand.
Best of luck and keep me updated,
Stevie.

Oh yeh and the Hunger Games is awesome...

OMG!!
so i just went out 2 my rooster with my dad and i picked a whole bunch of berries-a handful 4 me and a handful 4 my dad- and we kneeled outside and opened the hatch so my roo could get out. m8r got out and came over to us and we stuck out our hands filled with barries and he pecked one of my dads, then one of mine, my dad, mine and rite aftr he pecked one of my berries, he stuck out his neck feathers and jumped at me in the air with his spurs. i freaked out and screamed and stood up. my dad reached out and wacked him in the face and then, jumped at my rooster while my rooster was darting away. he came back like 2 sec. l8r and we stuck out our hands and fed him a tiny bit more berries when he jumped at me again & this time with more agility( i sound like a sports broadcaster haha). he actually hit one of my ribs which is actually still hurting as i type. my dad jumped up and grabbed down really fast to get him but m8r jumped away. my dad sprinted aftr him (like 2 yds.) and kept trying to hit and kick him but he got away. my dad prob. would have hurt him bad, cuz, i mean, im his kid, he wiuldnt want his roo. to beat on his kid like that.:/ ssoo, thats what happened when i tried 2 go out and make friends wit him. im actually still pumped with adrenaline cuz of it and it waz llike, 15 min. ago. idk if any of u have ever gotten attacked by a huge rooster, but its REALLY REALLY scary.
so, im hoping we can just get a nice one and give away m8r. although hes really pretty...but mean...but pretty.:)
oh ya. my dad was also confused because even though my dad was there, m8r only went aftr me, and thats cuz th pecking order goes::
my sister and dad,
m8r,
me & my mom,
hens.
PLEASE HELP EVEN THOUGH IM THINKING I SHOULD JUST GIVE UP & STAY AWAY FROM HIM. we wont give him away cuz my dad & sister r COMPLETELY against that.

To synopsize for everyone having trouble reading this, this is basically what happened:
Her and her father went outside and picked a handful of berries each to give the mean roo to try to make friends. They kneeled down outside and opened the hatch to the coop so the roo could come out. He approached them and they offered him the berries, and he ate a couple from her dad, then one of hers, and then jumped and kicked at her and tried to spur her. She screamed and stood up, and her dad took a shot at the rooster. Then, they kneeled back down and tried again, at which point the roo, predictably, tried to get her again, and succeeded, getting her in the ribs with his feet. Her dad went after him, trying to kick and hit him, but couldn't catch him. So now she wants to give the roo away and get a new one, but her father is against this.

Now that that's done, here's my opinion: Give him away, and get a new one if you want one. He's going to keep going after you. That's what they do. You don't need one, so you don't necessarily need to replace him. I had a very, very mean Buff Orpington roo (I know, odd, right? They're usually sweet. My current one is) and no matter what I did, he would not be nice. He went after everyone. Since he wasn't even mine to begin with (he moved in from the neighbors), I had no problems giving him away. And, he actually mellowed right out with a change of scenery. Hasn't gone after his new owners once. Anyway, he's probably never going to be your 'friend.' Get a new one. He WILL continue to go after you. Your best bet, if you must keep him, is to pick him up every time you go out and tuck him under your arm. That way, as long as you hold him so he can't struggle and get loose, he can't go after you. That's what I used to have to do to mine until I gave him away. It might help improve his attitude, too. If he doesn't want to get picked up, and he learns you're gonna pick him up every time he gets near you, he might learn to keep his distance. That's all I can really suggest.
