Librarians are also supposed to be a position that will be hard to fill in the coming years as librarians retire and fewer people are getting into it. I have a B.A. in secondary education and have had bad luck after bad luck trying to get and maintain a teaching job where the district doesn't lose 20% enrollment in a year and a half (did I mention I live in Michigan?) but I managed to get a job as a media specialist (library assistant) at a local elementary schools and I love it. It's definitely a job for a self-motivated person. But I like independent, objective work so I'm quite happy.
On a side note, when I was in college, I had to renew a book and after my night class ended at 9:45, I ran to the library to get it renewed. Behind the desk was a young man, barely twenty, leaning back in a chair, feet propped on the desk, reading a magazine. "I need to get this renewed," I said to him. Without looking up, he said, "You coulda done that online."
"Yeah, well, YOU look bored so YOU can do it for me." I left thinking, Man, I wish I could have a job where I can tell people that they can do my job for me without leaving their homes!
Honestly though, there is more to it than that!
