Who said quails are like chickens? They are more skitsie and more flighty. One of my button got out the other day and she came back - so yes maybe a bit like a chicken, but personality wise no. If you want chickens get chickens. Quail are quail - wild at heart.

Button quail are close cousins of coturnix and are of the same genus, different species.
They are generally single use birds (Pets) because they are so small. Lovely birds in their own right, but are sold and kept as pets.

There is a market for them in most areas, but adjustments in housing must be made. Eggs, chicks, and grown birds can be sold, for a fair profit, but as pets/breeders only. Their meat and eggs are considered to small for human consumption, though they are both edible. Most likely tasty. I can't say for sure.

If you are looking for a meat and eating egg market then avert your eyes. There will be plenty of time in the future to raise lovely pet birds like buttons.

Throw me a bone here guys!

I didn't want the button folks beating me up and didn't want to crash the button market. I read and see all the button quail posts, and they are lovely birds! Just useless for meat and eggs for eating!

If you want pets, coturnix aren't too wild. Mine that I have had since a couple day old chicks, now are full grown, let me pet them and pick them up, but I can't hold them for more than a minute or they flip out

I have to move them out of the way with my feet to avoid stepping on them. Mine are pretty mellow around me.

OMG! what did I start - sorry!!!. I have had chickens and brown quail before, both at different times. I never breed for meat - I just couldn't do that to something I reared. But good for you if thats what you want. I raised a sheep once and my husband slaughtered it and couldn't get myself to eat it. I had chickens and quails for eggs and pets.
Yes you can eat button eggs. I put some in a salad on the weekend for my husbands birthday. Large yolk for the size of the egg and very cute hard boiled and cut in half.
I wasn't trying to step on anyone, but because quail are gamebirds they are more prone to deseases that chicken carry with no ill affects. Also I think personality wise they would probably conflict a bit if kept together.
