I need a tutor in domestication I think. I may be hopeless

I can't sew worth a poop...not even buttons...I stab myself, sew shirt to the pants I am wearing trying to get that button on there...needles are dangerous...it seems I have always had jobs that were not really girl jobs or domestic in nature...I used to be able to cook but now that all the kids are grown and gone, I don't have much interest and usually end up wandering off and forgetting what I am doing...thank God for smoke alarms or I would have burned down the house eons ago...I sort of got tired of charcol dinners so I don't cook much any more...the micro wave has also saved my house...salads aren't dangerous and stuff slapped between slices of bread...pull over t shirts and gym shorts with elastic waists are my "uniform" these days...no sewing required...totally non domestic...I would rather shovel duck poop than dust...

Heather, my DD and I took a beginner sewing class at JoAnn's, and then took another class the next day to reinforce what we'd learned. Best thing EVER!

I got the classes at 1/2 price; they're offering a lot of specials right now. You take your own machine so that they teach you how to use that exact model.
We also met some cool people and LOVED talking to the instructor. She's lived in our area for a long time and was sooo sweet.

Also, you can take the machine that's not working in to be 'conditioned' and they will tell you what's missing and what you can do about it. Call and make sure your local store does this, or they can refer you to someone if they don't. The folks that do the "tune-up" of the machine will also make sure its in tip-top condition. Mom wants me to do that for the machine she bought me 21 years ago and I just learned how to use

I too now dream of doing feed sacks. And you know what? It doesn't look much harder than the pillow cases and throw pillows we made in our class!

I too have sewn since I was very young. Was making all my school dresses (couldn't wear jeans to school back then) by probably 7th grade. I learned from my mom and then was in sewing in 4H for years. I agree with ddawn.....a lot of it is just practice. Start simple and go from there. The first thing I ever sewed was an apron...it was pink checked gingham. I don't sew as much as I used to, but I'm still using my old singer that the hubby bought for me almost 40 years ago.
