That's a really good idea.
Something else to consider... If that kitten was sooo close to death and in such bad shape the vet bills would be much more than $500. Vet fees around here are very expensive for emergency care. I would think that she would have been charged for IV fluids ($$$), several medications ($$$), critical care treatment ($$$), emergency fees ($$$) and boarding costs ($$$). Does $500 sound reasonable to you for your area?
No it doesn't... This is what first started making me feel "off" about the whole thing.
Here is Rhode Island vet care is VERY expensive. Two years ago my then 5 year old lab got into the trash after Thanksgiving dinner and ate a ton of very high calorie leftovers, squash smothered in butter, turkey, pie bits, etc. etc. We didn't think anything of it until he started vomiting the next evening out of the blue, and didn't stop. I called an all night vet who told me they thought he was obstucted and to give him three slices of bread slathered both sides in butter in an attempt to move things along and then to bring him in as soon as my husband got home from work 2 hours later.
By the time hubby got home from work Reese (the dog) was sooo ill that we rushed him to a different, bigger emergency animal hospital where they kept him for 3 hours, did blood work, and gave him SubQ fluids. The DX was pancreatitis from all the high fat food, the cure was to let him rest and not give him anything (not even a drop of water) for the next 24 hours and then to slowly get him back onto water and then food. He's fine...
The bill for 3 hours there, blood work, and SubQ fluids was $465.93.
Now, she told me that she took him in the middle of the night and there is only two emergency vets in my state. Nearly everyone brings there emergencies to the one I brought my dog. The second one is small, has no heavy machinery for testing, no lab, etc. The big one I brought my dog to is much closer.
They had given us the option of keeping Reese overnight at the hospital so he could be watched but it would have cost over $200 for him to sleep there one night. Grated a dog is bigger than a cat and needs to be brought out, etc. but still. This place is EXPENSIVE and she claims he was admitted wherever he was for DAYS. Again though, she never did verify what animal hospital she brought him to.
We'll have to wait and see if she ever sends the bill and if it's legit.
