I need advice, no one else to ask...

I think you'll be okay. Take care of yourself right now. Deal with things as they come. It's no use worrying about what might happen, it will make you sick.

If you still think there is a threat of her being able to sue you for the mouth problem, perhaps you can discuss it in an e-mail and try to get her to verify that she knew the cat's problems before taking him (but in a sneaky way)? Best of luck to you and the kitty.

That's a really good idea.
Something else to consider... If that kitten was sooo close to death and in such bad shape the vet bills would be much more than $500. Vet fees around here are very expensive for emergency care. I would think that she would have been charged for IV fluids ($$$), several medications ($$$), critical care treatment ($$$), emergency fees ($$$) and boarding costs ($$$). Does $500 sound reasonable to you for your area?

If she sends you a vet bill make sure it's on the vet's official letterhead and not a computer generated bill by her.

I think a judge would laugh this out of court.......you live a few minutes away....she should have brought it back to you before she sought medical care.

I don't think it will go that far.

Relax and enjoy your days, don't let her give you panic attacks.

Stay Calm!!!

sorry to hear of this..but it depends on the laws in your state..start by looking into pet lemon laws, most states have them even for cheapo mutt animals,if money passes hands then its a sale and covered by these laws..in some states you would be responsible for the vet bills..thats why people selling animals cheap like you did, even for a good reason are better off sometimes giveing them away in the long run..

No it doesn't... This is what first started making me feel "off" about the whole thing.
Here is Rhode Island vet care is VERY expensive. Two years ago my then 5 year old lab got into the trash after Thanksgiving dinner and ate a ton of very high calorie leftovers, squash smothered in butter, turkey, pie bits, etc. etc. We didn't think anything of it until he started vomiting the next evening out of the blue, and didn't stop. I called an all night vet who told me they thought he was obstucted and to give him three slices of bread slathered both sides in butter in an attempt to move things along and then to bring him in as soon as my husband got home from work 2 hours later.
By the time hubby got home from work Reese (the dog) was sooo ill that we rushed him to a different, bigger emergency animal hospital where they kept him for 3 hours, did blood work, and gave him SubQ fluids. The DX was pancreatitis from all the high fat food, the cure was to let him rest and not give him anything (not even a drop of water) for the next 24 hours and then to slowly get him back onto water and then food. He's fine...
The bill for 3 hours there, blood work, and SubQ fluids was $465.93.
Now, she told me that she took him in the middle of the night and there is only two emergency vets in my state. Nearly everyone brings there emergencies to the one I brought my dog. The second one is small, has no heavy machinery for testing, no lab, etc. The big one I brought my dog to is much closer.
They had given us the option of keeping Reese overnight at the hospital so he could be watched but it would have cost over $200 for him to sleep there one night. Grated a dog is bigger than a cat and needs to be brought out, etc. but still. This place is EXPENSIVE and she claims he was admitted wherever he was for DAYS. Again though, she never did verify what animal hospital she brought him to.
We'll have to wait and see if she ever sends the bill and if it's legit.

Without reading all of the posts, this is what I would do. I would ask for a detailed, itemized statement from the vet the lady took the kitten to. Then I would go talk to that vet.

Next, I would go to my vet, and have him give a statement about the health of the kitten last time he saw it. Then have both vets confer on how the kitten could have gotten so ill in such a short amount of time.

If you have all of this on paper, any court should rule in your favor. Good luck!

You could threaten, I suppose that if you have to pay for the bills, you want the cat back too, especially if you are refunding the adoption fee....

I agree, the only way that I'd refund the fee was if I got the cat back.

The good thing here is if you can get the records from where ever she took it, if she really took it anywhere, then if she told them about the med's the cat was on when she got it and that it had be elect. then you have all the proof you need. That will show she knew the cat was sick when she took it and adopted it anyway. I did watch a case on a court show the other day and the judge told the lady for the seller to be responsible for the medical bills she would have had to have gave approval for them to be given. She had the choice to bring the kitten back if it were sick and you decide what to do. She choose to take it (if she did which I doubt) and she signed a paper at the vets saying she was paying for the sevices not you. I wouldn't worry about it too much. Just wait and see what happens. You really need to add somewhere on your adoption papers that these are rescue animal and that by signing to adopt them they become fully responsible for any and all vet bills fee's ect. for the animal.
