I need advice on dealing with a big fat murderous raccoon!

When we have relocated. We have always taken them to a secluded area where no one lives. We also make sure they have a creek from which they can get water. We live in a very rural area. Anytime you can relocate without killing is always best. I have never followed thru with the SSS but if something is trying to kill my chickens that may change. We have alot of racoons up here so we really secured our coop well. Something may still get inside, but hopefully it will be so tired when it does it won't hurt the girls.

So far, the raccoon hasn't come back. I will try using some stronger smelling bait tomorrow...probably tuna. I thought for sure that I'd have a coon in that trap the first night, but it's been 4 nights and nothing biting.

a relative of mine grows staggered batches of sweet corn to sell out in front of his house and wholesale accounts (100 or so acres, i would guess).

obviously, he is not able to have focused area where to watch for coons, but they will do many dollars worth of damage to corn.

he soaks anchovies in radiator fluid. i'm not saying you should do this, nor do i condone it, but just saying that sometimes poison is a solution.

DrTom, save yourself some heartache....get hardwire cloth 1/2" opening at the largest and get rid of any chicken wire. It is really useless and only keeps the chickens in. Coons are strong and better dexterity that some humans. They can unlock latches, pull a grown bird through chicken wire (which is something you never want to see) and they are wasteful. They eat the crop most often by ripping the birds head off and then leave the rest. Then they move on to the next bird. It will keep coming back and rest assured it will bring friends and relatives.

Set the traps, shoot the coon and reset. But don't be surprised to find a possum involved or a cat. Just kill whatever gets caught in the trap and carry on.


Sorry about your birds, it sucks big time I lost one a month ago to a coyote, killed the coyote 3 weeks later and am still hunting for her pups to destroy and 3 days later I punted a fox like a football off of one of my hens in broad daylight. I am on the predator warpath...if it comes in the yard and does not live here or belong here, it dies. Fox, coon, coyote, cat, dog, bear, bobcat or a danged rat it is going to die.

We trapped 2 coons within a few weeks of each other and haven't had a problem since. I believe it was the decomposing body left out back of the barn that made the point. Dry cat food is the best luck we've had. Now, I'm fox patrol. Our girls are only able to be outside a few hours/day because the fox is so bad. It got my favorite chicken last week. The rest of the flock won't even go out in the yard without me there with them. I can't do much about the fox because the neighbor's feed it on their porch

Keep your chickens in something, like a rabbit hutch, for a little bit. Then use a live trap and put something, such as raw chicken, in there. If he falls for the trap and you capture him, from there you can relocate it.
