I need help and FAST...Anybody a VET on these boards?

I don't know how they can outlaw syringes. That's just silly. People will get them one way or another, from nurses they know, etc--just like they do every other illegal drug/pill. Just stupid if you ask me. What about all the farmers who have to administer their own vaccinations to their animals? (And other emergency animal situations like yours.) What's to stop a druggie from recycling a syringe from a shot? I'm sure they don't care what was in it before! Stupid law...I'd be writing my congressman and senators.

I don't rant often, but I am blown away by the stupidity of this law!

Crack N' Egg. I remember you posting about Tic Tac before. I thought she was getting better with everything you've done for her. I'm sorry she's taken a turn for the worse. Chuckzoo...that's very kind of you offering to send Crack N' Egg a syringe.

At Chuckzoo- Thank you so much! You are so kind to offer that. Let me see if I can get one from the vet office up the road, but I'm not sure if they give those out freely.

At journey11- rant accepted! Ridiculous right??!! Welcome to NJ....it only gets better! LOL!

I have tried to do everything right. This is my first 'emergency' with our chickens. I've had fox hit our flock, but they just took the chickens. No injuries to deal with.

To top this all off,

I'm kicking myself in the ass because I had to do IVF to have both my children and had lot's and lots of syringes and 25, 22, 18 gauge needles left over. I got rid of everything about 2 years ago. Didn't think I needed them anymore

Stupid law! I can buy the meds but here but I have to drive over the bridge and pay the toll to get the syringes, grrr!!! When I was looking for them in TSC I asked about the canine vaccine and the guy told me I was allowed to buy them.

So I called a vet up the road and the nurse is going to talk to the doctor and see if they will sell me a box. They give them to their clients, but have never had anyone call asking to purchase some. They think the law is ridiculous too.

I should know within the hour if I have 'scored' (ha ha) or not.

If you do business with a local vet for dogs/cats that is where I'd start... local ones around are great about that OR go to the pharmacist that you do business with and explain the situation to him... their hands may be tied legally but it's worth a shot! (and I didn't even mean that as a pun). Good luck with your hen!

You may have to open the wounds and clean them out. Did you find the "bumble" when you first operated - it's a hard kernel looking core - usually very deep in the pad. When I'm doing the surgery, I spend probably close to an hour with the bird having its foot in and out of warm heavily salted water the whole time.

When I finish, I have a large, clean open socket of a wound which I pack with Neosporin and lightly wrap with vetwrap. What I think I do differently, that it seems others don't, is that I don't repeat treatment. I don't resoak or wash the foot after the initial surgery. I think repeated soakings kill off the tissue that is trying to regrow and prevents the wound from drying and healing. Normally, I just take the vetwrap off after a few days and the wound is closed up and I don't do anything else to the foot. I also don't give antibiotics and I haven't had a bird to have any complications or reoccurence of bumblefoot after the surgery.

While looking through older posts I found this;

CHICKENS-SOLUTION FOR BUMBLEFOOT

soaking the foot for 5 minutes a day in Tricide-Neo powder for FISH. She warned my friend to be careful as to not get the solution on herself. I have no idea as to why. Anyway to make a long story short after about a week of soaks the bird no longer has bumblefoot and never had to be cut open. The vet mentioned that they had been using this for sometime and were having great results with it.

You must mix it with distilled water only and it's good for about 10 foot soakings before you have to change it out. You soak the feet for 7 minutes a day...again, it takes time to cure, but it will happen. I bought the package to make 5 gallons and it's expensive. However if your good at math, you can break it down to one or two quarts dosages for soaking, and have plenty leftover for the course of healing. In the posts are the places where you can purchase it. Good luck.

Sorry I can't give credit to the two posters but I copy and pasted only this section for my own references, I am sure they know who they are though.
