My chickens just ran out of chick starter feed. I need to make a trip to the feed store to get more. Here's the problem: I'm not sure if I should go through another bag of starter or move on to grower. My chickens will be 4 months(16 weeks) this wednesday. What do you think? I don't want to harm their systems, but if they need calcium for eggs.... any thoughts help alot.

Move on to the grower, with one caveat: as long as they have been on medicated starter for at least two, if not three weeks SINCE they have been outside in contact with the ground. They need exposure WHILE they are on medicated feed or they won't develop any immunity.

They don't NEED extra calcium until they have started to lay; you don't need to add calcium before then. Nor should they be eating layer feed. Not until they are laying.

I don't use layer feed at all, because I have all ages of chickens, turkeys, geese and ducks. I use Nutrena "All Flock," which is similar to Purina's FlockRaiser. I keep crushed oyster shell in a separate dish - just an old dog bowl - free choice, 24/7.
