So I have planned and re planned and then said F this I'm buying a coop... and here I am still trying to plan out my own coop. I'm finding that I'll seriously need at least 2 set ups. Either using one as a tractor, or as a way to separate my girls if we have a problem. So I have gone on with my plans and decided that even if we do buy a second hand coop on Sunday then we will still be in need of an additional one. So... here's my problem... like many of my fellow newbie chicken keeper's I am not privy to the ins and outs of architectural design nor am I experienced in carpentry. I have a sketch that I drew up a minute ago and an idea.... that's about it. SO here's my laundry list of questions... ready? Set! GO!
How do I make this thing sturdy? I know it's essentially a rectangle box but.... will I need like braces and stuff?
How high off the ground should the nest boxes be? I plan on them being 2x2x2 boxes that are about 2 feet off the floor.
How will the girls get in there? The coop is only 4 feet wide in my plans the nest's are 2 feet wide, that means I have 2 feet to play with but I don't know if they can hop up there or if they need a ramp or some kind of ladder.
And any other suggestions or changes that you think will work. I have 5 chicks but one is ill and we have no idea if they are pullet's or roo's so were planning on having 3-4 hens. will this be big enough? Also how do I make those cool pvc watterer's and feeders? I totally LOVE them for the inside of my coop! Oh and how can I make the door to my coop (the chicken door not the lid) close?
