Hey guys! This is my first year raising chickens, and the girls are starting to lay consistently! I am having a hard time figuring out who is laying which eggs. I will upload a photo of some eggs, and if anyone knows which breeds laid them, I would greatly appreciate it. I genuinely can't believe how rewarding this new adventure has been, and it would just be so helpful to have a better understanding of what each girl is producing.

The three breeds I am confusing are Sapphire Gems, ISA Browns, and Golden Comets.

Thank you!

The problem with all brown layers is even individuals of the same breed will lay vastly different shades. I had 3 black Jersey giants and I could tell their eggs apart easily because they were all a different shade and shape.

I’m also currently trying to figure out who is laying what from my 20 some pullets. It helps that about half lay a colored egg but I still have to go out there and catch them in the act to be sure. That is really the only certain way, catch them on the nest and check often.

Some people set up a camera to see when a bird enters or exits a nest box.
There are also leg bands that may make it easier to identify an individual bird.

My flock is mixed, and all the pullets look different. So I just kept going in the coop, taking pictures of who was in what box, and then what egg was there when they left. (There'd often be a different bird in the box by the time I went back, so this took a while to match up.)
