Hello,
I posted on here recently trying to find a good home for my favorite chicken, a blue silkie bantam, that turned out to be a rooster because I was told they weren't permitted in city limits. I even bought chicken diapers and tried bringing him inside in the morning to hide it because I couldn't bear to part with him. I ended up having to put him on craigslist and finally found someone that seemed like the perfect fit, and told him he could come pick him up.
After I told my husband I found a home, he decided to call the city zoning commission (no idea why I didn't do this first, but I had no reason to doubt that roosters were banned because several people had told me this and in several areas they are.) As it turns out, you are allowed to keep roosters here. I called the guy back to explain to him how sorry I was, but this chicken was my baby. He told me he was already outside building a chicken coop and his kids were all excited. I told him about ideal poultry where they ship silkies really cheap (you can get 8 for $35 after shipping & taxes), but he wanted one already started.
I have 2 other white silkies, that we wanted to keep. One is 8 weeks old and one is 5-6 weeks old. I now feel obligated to give him one of the other 2 because I feel bad for promising him my rooster and then trying to change my mind. Plus he has my home address, as I told him where to come pick up the rooster. Since I am allowed to keep my blue rooster, I really want to breed him with one of my white silkies. How can I tell at this age which they are???
One is significantly smaller, but the older ones hair seems to be more of a poof then the slicked back rooster look. We tried checking their bottoms, but honestly I have no idea what I am looking for. I already don't want to give away one of my white silkies, but I feel obligated to do so. I would HATE if the one I gave away was a female that I needed and then became stuck with another male.
I can go take pics of each if it would help.....
