I need help to start a chicken farm / ministry

A very huge undertaking! I would like to help in any way I can... My resources will be limited by my lack of knowledge on the missionary front so far, but I'm ready and willing to learn!

One thing I just thought of that might help, with the electrical problem... It will create other problems though. Have you considered broody breeds? It's not near as fast or convenient as a big incubator, but it eliminates the need for constant electricity.

But hmmm, to.incubate 1000 eggs you'd need approximately 100 hens

It was a small thought lol

Hello Shortgrass,

Thank you very much for writing with your great encouragement and generous offer for help.

Right now I am not collecting any monetary donations for help. There are many critical needs, and I am have been sending my financial support to them, but I have not yet organized thework to the point where I am collecting funds. I don't even have a web site yet for this project. Eventually I will have as one site, where a donor can actually see the person they want to help, speak to them through an interpreter, and see their living conditions live.I was involved in ministry for 34 years after my conversion from atheism, and I hate the outright falsehoods, the subtle misleading innuendos, and the millions of $ donations that never make it to the people. Read Ezekiel 34 and see our Father's disgust over this.

However, our approach is to create an overall solution to the problems faced by the minorities and the suffering of anyone anywhere. Personally I was led to start by initiating the work in Pakistan, and it will grow from there.

Yes, the vision is enormous, and that is why I am looking for technical help in every area far beyond my knowledge. That is why I started with BYC, there is a forum here to ask for help. The people I work with are humble, unskilled, uneducated workers. I thought, since they are poor and hungry, the fastest avenue into production would be through chickens. They have very little animal protein in their diets, and one person can produce far beyond their immediate needs. For fun, I started with a dozen chickens, and every week there were far more eggs than our family of 10 (including extended family) could possibly eat, so we set the eggs out on Sunday for others to take. So I know this is possible.

As for the help we need, it includes everything you can imagine as a need - construction plans for housing, small business plans with the technical knowledge (sewing, agriculture, metal fabrication, vertical farming in containers, solar production - including producing the solar panels, creating Scriptural lessons, school lessons, instructional videos.even interactive live teaching in any number of areas.

Most "ministries" don't want people to be personally involved, because they will actually see what is done or not done on the field. But we encourage any degree of interaction. Not only can you see the work on the ground, but the suffering there will be able to see by your presence that someone actually does care, they are not forgotten, most importantly, that they are loved.

So shortgrass, you can fit into any part of this by letting me know your interests, your expertise, your knowledge. If you choose to work on a project, you will be given helpers there to carry out your instructions, if you care to be involve at that level. You can meet with them any time you want. But we do have strict guidelines on certain things, particularly in giving financial support.I have sent 1000s to them hoping they would help their people in return (and as I gave that money, I was living in a car at the time). Most did nothing but talk, others just took the money. My solution now is to give for known critical needs, in which they supply documentation (physician reports, test results). Otherwise I pay them a small amount (a month's wage) and it continues based on their productivity. It may help you to understand this situation to know the humble, uneducated will not be cunning enough to devise some way of receiving without working, but those who speak English are knowlegable enough to have their little schemes. Please don't let that discourage you from helping, it is normal to be found in difficult and abusive cultures (which is very common in our own nation.

I do not know how it works, but I can give you my contact information so we can further discuss you being involved as little or as much as you wish.

As far as the breeding, yes, we need to understand the process. I think we will have those in our community to focus on that aspect. Considering the use of an incubator, I am wondering if they can be constructed in discarded metal or plastic drums, or other similar containers readily and cheaply available. I would like to think of some type of solar power, not necessarily solar panels, but indirect heat collection, for example on concrete or solar heated water. I once toyed with the idea of water heated in a hose with the hot water rising to a radiator as as heat exchange, and the cool water falling passing back down into the system to be reheated, all without the need of a pump. I had a pool once where I was able to heat a lot of water in a black hose, and water from the filter passing through this part of the system.

Thank you, my dear brother for offering your help. However little or much you decide to help will be deeply meaningful to them.

Our Father and Creator and Christ within you, bless you abundantly in every area of YOUR needs in this life. I am very grateful for your kind offer of help. And to let you know you are the first to offer help on a continuing basis! Thanks

Well it sounds very overwhelming, but I know that God works his plans out aside from our wants or vulnerabilities. Small bites can be taken at a time to not seem so huge...

I can offer prayers, THAT I can do! :) I have experience with farming and husbandry, but almost none as far as construction... I'm not very good at technical things but I'm good with my hands.

Hmmm... Poultry woukd definitely be one of the easiest things to provide food and shelter over there, I would think. All they really need for that is safe enclosures, food, and water. Chickens are small, so transporting them and keeping them shouldn't take too much space or cause too much as far as waste is concerned...

I'm not familiar with the "legalities" over there. Are certain breeds not allowed? Do they have limitations on things like number if animals per person? In city limits, etc? I don't want to assume that everyone lives in caves or tents; I feel I'm doing a disservice to the people if I don't fully understand their daily situation. We're "westerners", so we don't really understand what it is to be in that culture or the significance of it.

That would help. Things like the laws, spoken language, etc.. How available certain " luxuries" we have here, like electricity.. I assume they don't have big box stores like "tractor supply" to gain feed and materials? They're essentially on their own as far as sourcing grain or vet supplies?

Hi Shortgrass,

The situation for minorities in Pakistan is dire. This past weekend three of my helpers did a walk through of a Christian neighborhood on Whatsapp, so I could see the actual conditions for myself. It looked like a war zone. In that particular sector, as in all others, police and fire services are very slow to respond when there are major disturbances in minority areas. So in this area a small group of 5 Muslims were allowed to go through there, bombing and starting widespread fires. Since that time they have been living in houses without roofs, windows or doors. I mention this to say that as far as keeping chickens in that area presents no problems at all.

I have been able to acquire a very small plot in a village (2 acres) where we will relocate these people, and there we can have a much larger chicken, goat, and vertical farming in containers. But in the suburbs where they are vulnerable to ongoing attacks, the chickens will need to be kept at a minimum so as not to become a target to have that taken away from them. And, they will stay in the structures, walled area, where these people live. Minimally they will just have a small fenced area. We are finding sites were we can repackage 100 kg of grain where they can come and pick up 1 kg packages for their families. They will also receive counseling and instruction in effective prayer that works, healing, etc.

I have a close Muslim friend through who we will petition the government to provide some land for their resettlement. I would like to form a group here and there in Pak to petition our government to withhold foreign aid until their blasphemy laws are rescinded and government provides normal services to the minority communities (which are other than Muslim or Christian). I learned recently that we can hire our own police officers, and some Christians are police officers there (Saddam Hussein often had Christians working for him because they could be trusted), but it takes a hefty bribe to get them in that position, which is under the domain of the military. All that to say we can give very limited aid to the Christians living in mixed areas, but what we can do, we will.

We need to keep in mind that Muslims themselves are equally at risk for terrorist attacks, and they equally abhor the actions of the Sunni, etc, terrorist Muslims.

As we develop chicken production in the country, we will give and sell what we produce in stores in the cities. As we become organized we will be buying grain and produce directly from farms in Pak. So we are trying to develop a more complete system than just bits and pieces of supplying immediate needs. Our goal is to not rely on outside donations, but to develop their own self sufficiency. So I have never asked nor received any donations.

In my own recent Christianity, I have focused on learning spiritual things in which I can see our heavenly Father actually work, ie we see His miracles and provision, hear from and be guided by Him, commune directly with Him in a way that brings health, peace, and a loving relationship with our world. Some mistake this for New Age practice, but it is a spiritual normalcy revealed throughout Scripture from beginning to end. And in Scripture over and over God tells us to trust in the true and living God Who actually DOES something. He wants to be our Father, not an icon, and fathers take care of their children.

So I do highly value effective prayers.

As far as practical help that you can give, we are being given an instructional manual by a member of BYC, and you can directly work with those who are developing our agricultural projects by means of Skype and/or Whatsapp. They will be able to show you what the are building, how they are taken care of their chickens or other animals and crops for which you can give them guidance. Again, we are hoping to produce crops through vertical farming in containers. One of the most important things by being in personal touch, is that they see your concern and love for them. When their Muslim neighbors see that we care and love them, they will also come to us, and they will know there is a far better way in life than they ever imagined. So far they have no idea of what is in the hearts of true Christians and true Americans.

Please do not let my slow progress discourage you. As you know, I am just one person by myself right now. My son who always told me not to get involved, because of the risk, he has joined my in this, and I thank my heavenly Father for that.

Bless you, Shortgrass, and I ask my Father to bless you greatly with things you have never yet seen or experienced with him. Remember, we are working with Christians who have been and are being refined in the fire, and they would love to pray for your needs or problems, so don't hesitate to ask for the precious things they have to offer as well. Again, our Father bless you.

As far as incubation goes there ARE Kerosine powered incubators. one sold in the states is made by Lehmans

My grandfather used to brood hundreds of chicks at a time using a Corrugated tin bottomed box with wood sides filled with desert blow sand. Underneath it he placed kerosine heaters or lamps.

Best to go to third world technology and not depend on electricity for any of it.

You may be able to source eggs in India and Europe as well. Not up on the logistics of that though.

@ChickenCanoe is by far one of the best sources of info

Best of luck

Having worked in the humanitarian / development world for two decades, i feel that you may be better served considering communities as a whole. Equally important is some very interesting research that shows giving cash to families is a more effective means to supporting sustainable, local development. For a host of reasons, international development agencies choose to ignore what has been proven to be a very effective development tool.

Welcome to BYC - I wish you well with your project. It might be an idea to contact The Agricultural University in Faisalabad, they seem to be doing research on chickens that come from Pakistan, rather than importing from another country.

Great idea! (sorry, missed this before my last post, must be my old eyes.)

Hello Casportpony,

Hopefully I will be selling my house soon, and I will be much more able to start developing the intended projects. I was taking a bus to Bloomington, IN and "by chance" (divine) sat by a Muslim Pakistani student. We talked about my work there, and even though I was a Christian and focusing on helping Christians among other minorities and the Muslim poor, he, and other Muslim Pakistani students, they were all eager to help me. So, yes, I believe I will find a great deal of help there in the universities, among the educated in Pakistan. We need to remember, that the radical Sunni, etc, Muslims target all others, and even the majority of Muslims live in fear. Unfortunately their fear does not often translate into compassion for the non-Muslims suffering there, but the more idealistic, well educated younger generation more often do want a more open, peaceful society in Pakistan.

My point is, yes, you are right about getting advice from these vet/agri departments of universities.

Thank you very much for your suggestion. Our Father bless you for your concern for them.

Hello Perchie Girl,

Thank you VERY much for the idea of using kerosene heated incubators, and also for the link where to buy them in Pak. I do think we will be using a lot of old tech in my work there.

Bless you my friend.
