This is my first time raising any type of bird. I recently got two parakeets and just noticed that one is bald beneath the wings. There is a HUGE patch of bald. I was able to capture about a fourth of it as shown in the picture i have uploaded. I did a bit of research on the internet and am wondering if it is molting, beak and feather disease, or some kind of virus. ANY advice is very appreciated. Thank you.

My bird died this afternoon right when I was about to take him tot he vet.

I have another one left and he seems to be fine but I will keep a close eye on him. The bird seemed to be young, but I'm a bit suspicious that he was ill from the beginning because his feathers were falling out since the first day I brought him home. I looked it up online and thought he was just molting. I've bought a mirror for now for my other parakeet. Thanks anyway :)

So sorry for the loss of your bird. If you think it died of PBFD, it would be useful to have your remaining bird tested to be sure. This virus is very resistant in the environment, so if the remaining bird is indeed positive for PBFD, I wouldn't buy another bird to put in the cage with it. This virus can be transmitted via dust, dander, direct contact. We can carry this virus in our clothes as well.

Hope this helps.
