A dog got one of my silkies and the skin and flesh on the neck is gone. All that I see is the muscle. What should I use to treat this? I need a way of keeping it clean. And would like to know what to use on the wound. Also his feathers are sticking to the sore. Should I soften it and remove the feahters? If he recovers from this will he grow feathers again? Will his skin in that area be thinner?
What I have done so far is seperated him from the rest of the flock and keeping him in a cage instead of letting him roam around. I have vetericyn and sprayed it with that. I want to treat him as best as I can and don't really know what else I should do.

Clean wound couple times a day, trim feathers sticking to wound. Keep using vetericyn, watch for maggots, keep him separated from other chickens until wound has healed, reason is that other chickens will peck open wound and possibly kill him. Make sure he is eating/drinking. You could give him electrolytes for shock. For pain you can give a baby aspirin(81mg)dose is 25mg per lb of body weight, crush and sprinkle over food,or place in water. Aspirin may make him sleepy. NOTE: if there is heavy bleeding, hold off until bleeding stops, aspirin thins the blood. You might want to start him on a course of antibiotics for infection, dog bites are puncture wounds and can become very nasty. Signs of infection are redness, swelling, foul smell coming from wounds, roo not eating/drinking,becoming lethargic.

Betadine and anti biotic powder ...it worked for my hen when she got attacked by a english bull terrier and we could see her bone (under the wing) it took her around 3.5 months for it to completly heal but she survived .....its a really cheap treatment and it worked for me ........GOODLUCK!

ok. thanks. got the betadine and been using the vetericyn. The wound looks great so far. he is healing well and eating and drinking. I feel bad because he wants out of the cage really bad. I dont want him getting around the others or getting dirty so he dont like me right now.
