So sorry for your loss.

In my personal experience, this was an accident and I would give the hen a second chance... but with better provisions to keep the chicks inside the box. It's a personal choice though and each experience may be different. There is ALWAYS some risk.

she is getting her second chance at motherhood , still sitting on her batch of eggs.. I have been hand feeding her and water in a bowl she is happy to receive from me l. as I haven't noticed her off the eggs much so was also my concern she may of been hungry. but her comb has lost color so I worry she was dehydrating herself .. she Glady took lots of water from me and food while sitting on her nest

Id give her a chance. Block her nest off from the flock, put some food and water within her reach and let her alone to hatch her babies. You will soon find out if she's a good mother or not. Broodies often lose weight and condition. She will regain it. Sorry about your lost chick.
If the chick had a bit of blood on it, that could be the reason mom pecked at it.
If your other hen hatches chicks around the same time as this one, you can give her the chicks if this hen isn't a good mother. Slip them under her at night. Good luck and watch this mama carefully.

How long has she been broody? Are the eggs set to hatch on the same day... staggered hatching could be an issue if not.

I only give my broody's feed and water near by once chicks are hatching and they are locked in. They need to move around and get rid of the waste built up. So if hatch wasn't in progress I would boot them.

But if she is hearing peeps it may be telling her to sit tight. You can lift her off a little and check, or even candle tonight. How many eggs? Have you checked for development?

Two broody's hatching at the same time is inconvenient to me and sometimes confusing to the chicks... that is especially true with my Silkies who all look alike though. So I prefer to spread it out a little if possible. But it can still work out plenty fine, lots of people do it.
