A peahen adopted me in July and has lived in my front yard for the past 4 months. She perches in a large tree out front every night and I’m worried about the winter. I have tried to lure her into my garage by feeding her there but she won’t go further than the door. Do I need to do something specific for her for winter. I live in surrey bc Canada. I am willing to build something for her but I have a feeling she won’t voluntarily give up her tree perch. And I don’t want to trap her for fear of stressing her out. Can anyone help?

Hello! @Missysmom1 I would recommend that you post this on the emergencies thread. 💗 Are peafowl winter hardy?

My first thought is that you should try to have someone help you to get her in the garage, or try to get her out of the tree at night.

I live in Eastern Ontario, Canada. Our winters are very snowy and cold. I am amazed how well our flock of peacocks do. They have a large run and and access to another large area in the barn. If it is a cold but sunny day, they happily tromp through the fresh snow and perch in the sunshine.
I agree that trying to catch her and force her into an enclosure would be very stressful. Perhaps you could provide a some sort of shelter, three sided with a roof, where she could get out of the wind if she chooses to. Maybe placing food inside it would help her to see it as safer than the garage.

I remember seeing free-ranging peacocks in Beacon Hill Park in Victoria, on Vancouver Island. Maybe someone there can give you some advice. I'm thinking your weather patterns may be similar.

Thank you for your time. You are much colder back there but we are catching up. I know she finds shelter during the rain but it’s that dusk til dawn I’m so worried about. 😢

Yea they do. Thanks so much. I appreciate you! Children with feathers. ❤️

She’s pretty crafty. I built her a beautiful nest and a tall perch. Attached large boughs of evergreen all over it so it looks like it’s in a tree. I put them both in the garage. Which is heated. And from then on she refused to eat in there. We had a bad winter last year so I’m certain things will be the same. Ty so much for answering my question. I’ll do that. ❤️

Where would I find the Emergencies Threads to post? Ty

She is in the tree at night because that is what they do. I think this peacock thread is your best bet for advice. I wouldn't consider it an Emergency.
Just found some interesting articles in the Vancouver Sun newspaper from 2019. It seems that peacocks were taking over Surrey, B.C., and residents voted to have them caught and removed.
