i need reasurance that i have done all i know to do.

two year old hen stopped laying.two months ago.she is very lethargic.walking really slow.breathing really hard when she walks a short distance.she has been looking ragged around her thigh and leg area.i just assumed she was starting to molt.her two flock mates had similar symptoms when they went through their molt a month or so ago.EXCEPT she is very swollen around her vent and abdomen area.i feel as though its more than a molt.i put her in a warm bath and message her abdomen.than put some surgical gloves and KY jelly and inserted my finger.i could not feel any eggs.DH gave her a penicillin shot in her thigh.and than we gave her some electrolytes water and a baby aspirin.she is one of my first hen.i 'am going to be very upset if i lose her.
Try some human calcium 500 mg with 1000 mg vitamin D. I break the pill up in a little water that I know mine will drink in a short time. That way I know they get it into them. If her vent is swollen and protruding, get some vitamin E capsules, 400 iu and break it open and put the oil on her vent. I would continue with the antibiotics as well.

edited for spelling and not reading it all first.

I rushed down to the coop.after I got home from work,i was so afraid that she had passed on.but she is still hanging on. she seemed a little more alert this evening.i put some vitamin e oil on her vent.she is still extremely swollen.DH gave her another shot of penicillin.I plan on taking her to the vet tomorrow.

the vitamin E normally work in 3-4 days. Depending on how bad the swelling is. You might want to bring her in as well so you can give her warm baths. This helps as well and keeps everything fairly clean.

She seemed better this morning.so decided against the vet.she was eating.and wasn't breathing as hard.she was no more swollen than yesterday.will continue to give her penicillin.will keep everyone updated.

Internal laying is genetic/hormone based. No cure, no prevention. Her age is when you first start seeing it, especially in the most common hatchery egg breeds like sex links, production reds, etc. I've lost probably 15 hens to internal laying and/or egg yolk peritonitis. They are chronic conditions, never permanently cured except through surgical hysterectomy by a vet, still a risky surgery many dont survive. I don't have my usual computer due to a house fire or I'd give you links to my sagas with this issue. If you look up threads by me about my Olivia or Ivy, you'll see some of what happens with this stuff.

Sad Day.Dh had to put her down this morning.
