Hi, I'm new at this but I just wanted to know if anyone could tell me what could have happened to my goose and baby chick. -- Some one gave me some geese eggs awhile back and only 1 goose hatched, and I already had 2 baby chicks. I put the goose and the chicks in the same pen (with a light) and they were doing great! After awhile I put then in the same pen outside (with a light) and and they did great for a few weeks! One morning I went out to check on them and they were doing fine. A few hours later I went out there and one of the chicks were laying there dead with a clear slimy liquid in its mouth. And the goose was laying there just fine but its legs were stiff and he couldn't move them. I exercised his legs and put him under the light and in a few hours he was better, but the other chick was just fine (obviously the one that didn't die)! I'm not quite sure what happened...does anyone have any ideas on what could have happened?

Oh and if this makes a difference the goose is an African goose, the chick that died was a Americana and the other chick is a lavender Orpington.

I would appreciate it if anyone could tell me what could have happened!

Ok thanks anyway! I will probably do what you said. Thanks!

It sounds like it might have eaten something poison. Some toads are toxic, and some slugs too, beetles as well. I would guess, because of the slime on the mouth, it was something poisonous. Being small, the chick didnt ahve a chance, but the goose, being larger may not have gotten enough in it to do serious harm, but the side effect was enough to stiffen up its legs. It may have been a spider too. Being from Georgia, there no telling what they got into.

I lean toward it being poisoning also. Even moldy chick feed can cause it. When you mentioned slime in his mouth, I thought he might have tried to vomit something that bothered him.

Ok, thanks for the advise! I will try and be more careful with what gets into the pen (if I
Can its hard to keep smaller things like that my pen since I do live in Georgia)
