I have had chicken several times in the past. I had a chicken coop fenced-in that I'm estimating was one eighth of an acre with a chicken coop in side of it that was an 8 by 10. I locked the chickens in at night and let them free range during the day and I got tons of eggs which I would give away. Some kind of animal killed all of them in a short amount of time. After I fixed the fences I got some more chickens and put them in the pen and never let them loose. They ate every single blade of grass in the pen and they would not lay me any eggs. The only way to get them to lay eggs was to buy high-dollar oyster feed which was more than buying the eggs at Kroger. I finally let them loose in the yard and I would find their nest all over the place but I would never eat the eggs because I had no idea how old they were. The yard was not fenced in and most of them were killed. I gave the rest away instead of just letting them get killed or locking them up and not getting any eggs. Now I want to do some chickens again. I have a yard that is 3/4 to 1 acre total and it is completely fenced in and almost chicken proof so that the chickens cannot get out. Does anyone know if this is too big of a yard for 30 or 40 chickens? As long as I locked them up in the chicken house which is an 8 by 10 for a week or two will they not come back to lay in The Henhouse once I set them free.

No such thing as too big of a yard for chickens. ;-) As for laying, if they start laying in the nest boxes and are used to it, then they should come back to them. I wouldn't let them free range until they are laying good in the nest boxes. You can do oyster shells for calcium, or crushed up egg shells.

I had 55 chickens free range in a chainlink fenced 1 acre land ... they did great! We had trees for cover and locked them in at night. Only lost 2 to a opossum and 1 to an owl(they were young and kept roosting in the trees.
Right now they are free ranging on 40 acres they omly stay in the 2 acres around the house and coop but i domt have them fenced... no problems... just moved there so no fence built yet... i typically leave the chickens or any bird in the coop they are goning to live im for lkle 3 weeks and then let them free range. That way they know its their home ans place to lay.

I would not put more than 20 birds in an 8x10 coop.
Free ranging does not make up for a crowded coop.
You need to feed them a good chicken ration and provide oyster shell in a separate container.

A predator proof run is a great asset even if you range most the time.
A fenced yard does not necessarily eliminate the chickens getting out,
or predators getting in.

Knowing your location can help, good to put it in your profile.

My Coop is 8x12.....It comfortably only holds the 8 Chickens I have..I have a Huge Brahma Rooster and Orpington Hens plus one Silkie cross...Once the Nest boxes are added the space actually is less....
Certain breeds require more space...I don't believe in the recommended space...More room is best...
