I need some experienced wisdom here( i had an inccident yesterday)

GQ, we have the pair of them. We also have 3 cats, a mini doxie, the goats, chickens, ducks and geese and rabbits. Oh and guineas. They are fine with any and all animals we show them and tell them that it is theirs and to keep it safe. Any strange animals (including the neighbors cats and wild birds) are promptly driven off. We got both as 8 week old pups, and socialized them as much as possible the first year. Spent the second working them with the animals and the property boundaries. Both turn three this Nov and Dec.

Yes doing field fencing a little at a time works as you eventually have it all done. We set wood posts one day, paint (those that we want white) another, and run fence another. 50-100' at a time is workable for us and we make it a 2 man team when doing it.

Thanks for sharing, this is good to know. It may come to that in future. The fencing is so labour intensive.. we actually have the one side almost fully done... but never got to the other side, which clearly has now become more of an issue. I think i will check to see if can find some used, rods would work.. we did a post and rod combo for one of the back paddocks.. vs all wood posts around the barn.

We use metal posts as extras in the west pastures where we get high water at times. Helps keep the wood stable in our sandy soil.

it is labor intensive, but something you can be proud of when done. Unlike if you could pay someone to do it in a day or weekend.

True that!

Oh Quackers- I am so so SO sorry! We have field fencing around our acreage and that's it. And honestly that's likely all we will ever have. It's not predator proof- pretty standard for ranching/farming out here. So I feel ya. Free ranging is what we have opted as well. We will be letting our chickens out in about 2 months too during the day. I would be heartbroken to make the same discovery as you. Even if you do not have a gun- I would at least consider a BB or pellet gun. No license and it will sting the dickens out of a dogs behind.

Thank you. I'm still sorta in disbelief, i think my biggest thing is i resent being so worried.. i mean obviously i always held a level of concern but not like this, generally we just don't have issues in the day.. night is the problem here which i why i take measures for that time.

We have pretty much decided we will fence the other side of the property, the trouble will be financing the idea and doing it, so it will be a process, a definite bit at a time type project, it'll just be some typical page fence but will make things harder to come through..

In the meantime i have that snow fence up where it came through, after that it clears out to much and then it leads to the horse paddock so the direct line into the ducks have been given an obstacle. I am very frustrated at this point though, this is a difficult issue to resolve. The birds have always free ranged, from quite young and return at dusk.. i had quite a battle last night when i went out and had to bring them in early due to the recent events i felt uncomfortable even though i did return before dark, this is not what they are used to doing, you know ducks.. heavy with routine.

When my ducks are out free ranging and i have to go off, I get out the treat bowl full of mealworms[dried] and begin to whistle and shake the bowl, They come a running from every angle, then I look like the Pied Piper with the crowed following me inside their fenced in area. so maybe get a routine going so you can get them to cooperate better. Even though something could still climb into the fenced in area, I feel better about them being inside closer to where my dogs can start barking and possibly scare something off.

Just saw the thread. Sorry for the loss.

I agree, it sounds like a dog. We have that problem here. Worst part is they are our landlord's dogs and one of them is a GP. Whenever I see them, I go out and run them off. We also don't have guns, yet. I've told my husband that I want to get a bat or 2 or 3. He thought this was crazy but I would rather have something available at all doors if something comes along. Bats are aerodynamic too so siwng would be easy. I plan to look at some thrift stores for some but they are only $10 at walmart.

I was lucky that there was alot of old fencing rolled up in the pasture here and the landlord didn't care what I did/used. I would put an ad on craigslist for fencing. I see a good amount of ads here for free fencing, if you remove it. Labor intensive but free.

Again, so sorry for your loss.

Bats are good idea too, even slinging one at something you may get lucky and actually hit it. Makes me so made when people let their dogs run loose. They say hey its the country why not?

little do they know or care that their dogs are wrecking havock somewhere else.

Not all LDG's are poultry trustworthy. They have to tested with them and often raised from very young with poultry/waterfowl to be good guarding them. We love our two so much we are adopting a new one through rescue, but will be older than ours and poultry background. This way we dont do the puppy route again and have another guardian.

Motion sprinklers are also effective in many cases since its a sudden surprise blast of cold water.
