The duramycin is an antibiotic and will do nothing for your chick if she has cocci. This is a good reminder for anyone who is raising chicks to always have a cocci treatment on hand - I keep both sulmet and corid stocked up at my house. Unfortunately, I've found that employees at the farm stores know little to nothing about raising chickens, but are not shy about offering bad advice. Chicks that are as sick as yours do not usually make it, but you can try giving her some vitamin/electrolyte water via syringe (I use the poly-vi-sol mixed in pedialyte or even sugar water) and if the chick seems hungry, I mash up a boiled egg yolk and mix the med water with it to a runny consistency and feed that with syringe or eyedropper.

I went out farther this afternoon until I found Sulmet and have now given her a dose of that. I did not have mixing instructions for a syringe so had no choice but to guess. I got some electrolytes for the 5 remaining chickens. From what I can read tho it says if you are dosing with Sulmet/Corid to stop giving the polyvisol vitamins.

I need lots of prayers/luck tho, she can no longer walk when I try to stand her up. She sits with her head raised as if she is alert but I guess she is quickly going downhill.

Raising chickens should be a nice experience - sadly there are times when culling a chick is the best thing to do - I know you don't like to do that but sometimes it is necessary - sometimes we got to realize that maybe what we are trying to keep a chick alive for our benefit and not for the chick - from what you have been describing - including all the running around - I think it may be time to send this chick to chickheaven - I'm sorry

I have a guinea keet 2 weeks old that is doing the same thing.. the other 11 are fine, this one just sits..it is starving itself, wont eat or drink... i have kept it alive w/ electrolytes and water through an eyedropper...heading to TS to buy the meds.. hopefully they have it. I hope your hen makes it.

The Corid 20% for cattle is the right stuff. You mix it 1 teaspoon per gallon of water and give it for 5 days. It is much easier than Sulmet on their systems plus there is no egg withdrawel if you had layers.

I had 6 chicks die of cocci a few weeks ago. 3 had died before I figured out what was wrong with them. The others are doing fine. Good luck!

If you are dosing with Sulmet liquid, dose at the rate of 2 tablespoons per gallon of water for 2 days, then 1/2 that for another 4 days. The chick that is very sick should be given the medicated water via eyedropper or syringe because it's important they get enough of the medication to work. Sometimes their systems are just too overwhelmed and they cannot overcome it, but it's worth trying - sulmet works quick. Good luck & hope the baby makes it.

Just wanted to add that Corid IS much easier on birds than sulmet, but corid only kills one type of cocci & if chicks have been on medicated feed, which contains amprolium (same medication as corid in smaller amounts), it's very possible the corid will not work. It's said that sulfadimethoxine is safer than sulmet, same class of drugs. In a bad outbreak I use one of the sulfas as I feed medicated starter and have found the corid to be ineffective.

I have treated the water with 2 TLSP of Sulmet per gallon for my seemingly healthy 5 chickens. So just to clarify, should I treat the sick chick with a dropperfull of this same solution?

I would. She needs both the water and the medicene. You might want to give it to her a few times a day. They can go without food for a little while, but not water.
