I have read so much conflicting information about mereks disease. I called the hatchery that I got them from (vaccinated for mereks) and they told me they normally get it between 14-20 weeks then they are in the safe zone. I read experts state up to 30 weeks. My vet says only 2 out of my 15 should stAtistically catch it. I lost 2 so far. They are 21 weeks old. Perfect appetite perfect combs and wattles perfect crops. But one lost her balance for just a second tonight. Ok chicken owners... tell me your experience please. When can I take a breath and stop worrying???

It’s more like 30 weeks or more. I just vaccinated for mareks today actually. Chicks are given a vaccine right at their hatch. If one has it all have it. Some live some don’t, when one shows signs you need to separate it. The thing about hatcheries is that they are all hatched together so the vaccine won’t be as reliable, and it’s not completely reliable anyway. But it’s the only thing for mareks unfortunately.

How disheartening. I hope this bird tonight just tripped over a limb. Her crop was full and solid she hasn’t been tired like my last two.

Did the birds you lost have a necropsy and testing to confirm Mareks disease? There can be other reasons for an illness that may appear similar to Mareks. What were their symptoms?

The first one was slowly paralyzed from her leg up to her neck. No crop grey weird pupils. The other was able to walk one day then as the day progressed she was paralyzed both legs and one wing. I had them both put down. This one just kinda tripped back when she pooped. My vet clinically said they both looked like mereks and she checked them for mites and worms and both were negative.

I did not have necropsy
