I posted another thread about having too many drakes, when I was breaking the news to my son we walked over and I noticed that the rouen with female colors also has a very small drake feather. And I was just about to tell my son that we could keep all of them but then I saw the crested fawn/pekin get up and try to run from me. It's leg is very obviously badly broken near the hip.

Is there a best way to slaughter them? My ducks are terrified of me so I dont really see a way to do it without it flipping out and hurting itself the whole time. Also, I wasn't anticipating processing any animals for a couple of months so I really haven't looked into it. What do I need to run out and buy?

So sorry! What an awful experience!

Go in at night. They may be easier to catch. I collect the desired birds and stick em in a dog crate. I remove the head with an axe on a stump. Fast painless, and they will bleed out nicely once hung if you are eating them. So sorry that you are in this situation :hugs

I wouldn’t rely on the tail drag curl. I ordered six female ducks and they’re all definitely girls because they are quack now but one of them had a slight drake curl when she was a bit younger. I would pick up each one and see if they quack or like a raspy waaasp sort of version. Are you asking on how to help the one with the broken hip pass on or are you trying to get rid of others as well? Can you post a video or a picture of your ducks and your duck with the hurt hip?
I got straight run from a farm store too. I got three ducklings two boys and a girl I just separated the two boys and they are by themselves. So far it’s worked out really well and they are happy. You might be able to separate some of your boys and have one drake with a few extra females including the one you already have.
If you have all boys there is nothing to worry about they will live fine happy lives even without any girls.
Hope this helps good luck!;)

why not make a bachelor pen? they can be best friends if not having girls to fight over

i love my drakes they are so sweet
You can butcher the female, and then keep you males so you don't have to cull them all, and just put hem in a separate pen a little distance from the existing pen, so they can't see the ladies to easily.

Yea I have my questions about that... The rouen definitely has female colors and they all quack but all have the drake feather.

As for my injured duck, after it stopped being able to walk at all I piled food in front of it and it was already right next to the water. I'm not sure how exactly but it looks like the leg is healing. It was completely sticking out sideways the day I noticed it like it had snapped in half and dislocated but now it's able to limp without too much difficulty. Glad I didn't jump the gun and euthanize immediately because it sure looked hopeless at the time.

I'm glad she's doing a little better!
Good luck and hope things continue to get better! :)
I'm going to tag someone who may be able to help you with meds, pain killer and maybe how to splint it.
