how to tell if a hen is broody... my hen that i just bought thats a yr old just laid her first egg since ive gotten her i picked the egg up and put it in the nest i made for her. how can i tell if the egg is fertilized? and how can i tell if she is broody??? i am new to all of this!!!

ok if yu dont have a roo or if it wasnt with a roo when you bought her... no fertilization-if she was broody she would not have "let " you take her egg--normally they need or want alot more than 1 egg to want to sit on them -usually 8-12 eggs-takes 1 hen a long time to "save " up that many eggs if shes the only one laying-do you have others?

she is with a roo and was with a roo when i got her... and yes i do have other roos but not anymore hens, just her. and i dont think that she would of put up too much of a fight for the simple fact that she was already on the roost pole, and at the time she didnt have a nest at all till about 15 mins ago i wasnt expecting to lay so soon(only had her a day) so i havent made a nest but she has one now. is it still possible that she is still broody?? and she has been with a roo at all times even b4 i bought her, but is there anyway to tell if its fertilized??

Most possible fertile, but not broody. She would be in the nest not on the post.

If she was sitting on a roost pole, then she's not broody. She would be in the nest, and would be all fluffed up, and would not be friendly to you if you got near her. Some just growl at you. Others peck. But if she is on a roost voluntarily, she is not broody. You just got her first egg at your house. Congratulations!

yup, crack that egg open and look for the "bullseye" white spot on the yolk-dont break the yolk open though -you wont see the spot! look up bullseye-in the search section and it will show you great photos of what you need to look for-it very well could be is that she is fertile-the eggs-but broody IDK?? Let the eggs build up for a bit and see if she continues to sit on them without leaving them for more than 15 minutes a day to eat and poop!

If you don't want to crack it to look for the bullseye, you could put it in the nest, see if she lays in the nest tomorrow, now that she has a nest. If she stays in the nest, she might be broody. If she leaves the nest right after she lays, and goes back to roosting or scratching, then she's not broody. She probably isn't broody yet. Do you have a bator? Then you could hatch her fertile eggs without having to have her be broody.
