Just reading this thread for the first time and found it rather disturbing that anyone would give approval before time/money and actual lives were invested only to do what yours did. How ridiculous. I would say childish even but that's an insult to kids everywhere.
I'm very glad you had a change of heart and took the time to speak to each of your neighbors individually and found a lot more support than I'm sure you were expecting. As for your passive aggressive neighbors...I'd venture to say they kind of dug their own graves in your HOA and I doubt they'll be taken very seriously when it comes to any future issues they decide to raise with any other neighbors.
On another note, not that it's relevant anymore but a coop such as yours on craigslist here in Maine would go for somewhere between 600 used and 1000 or more new. I spent all winter/spring looking to upgrade and that seemed to be the average for the size I was looking for.
