I do not mean to be insensitive at all - at least you were saved from doing the deed to your beloved bird. I had to do the deed in September to the only rooster I kept as my flock king after he got a respiratory infection and could not beat it. I sobbed as I ended his suffering. He could not breathe and I could not stand watching him gasp and rattle for his next breath. He was a young cockerel who had won his White Leghorn class in the open division over 7 other birds. He was such a lovely bird. They are not "just a chicken" - they are our lives.
