I tend to keep signs short and non-polite in these cases, otherwise I find they are completely ignored more often. Something like, "Do not approach dog" and a picture of a hand being bitten like you see on zoo signs usually works better than something with softer wording like, "please do not approach", or a humorous sign. You'll still probably get people comign up and just reaching out though.

Do NOT use anything that says bite or indicates aggression. It could be used against you if anything happened. Simply DO NOT PET on a stop sign would be good

Doesn't it cover you more if something were to happen, similar to how you are better off legally (and I think obligated in some areas if you have a known aggressive dog) with a sign indicating that a dog in you backyard is aggressive? I could very well be completely incorrect, as I am not familiar at all with such things. But I am curious!
