Heck at this point...do what my grandfather did with my black and tan coonhound years ago.

Tie that dead rooster around his neck...tightly so he cannot get it off, put the dog on the chain and shorten it so he can reach food, water, shelter but nothing else. Leave it till it decomposes off of him. The smell of it worked for her, after that she would run away from the chickens if they came near her.

It is worth a try...you are running out of options with him.

Good luck.

I don't get how this works as my dogs LOVE stinky dead things and roll in them every chance they get

i wont be getting another dog if he goes. the roosters run from myself and the dogs. my other 2 dogs come down to the coop with me, one actually goes inside with me. i am 100% the roosters didnt charge him. hes still a puppy and he saw a fun toy......

My female Bernard, Daisy Mae, got out in the yard like last week..and yup..she thought it was fun to run by the chickens and pull out their feathers and try to grab their feet.(my roo got his tail plucked and my white rock hens wing was torn feathers...)..while they were squaking and running around like crazy...it was a game to her..not a vicious attack....but still if i had not been home..i would have had dead chickens!...

so, the one thing in this world she hates is a prong collar..so..i got it out and put it on her..and we went in the back yard...if she even looked at one of my chickens i yanked it up hard...and said "no!".*and she would drop down into submissive posture...*..then i picked up random hens and held them and petted them and told her "easy!" and "see the babies?" *those are my cue words for her to know that they are MY property..its how i introduce all my cats and other pets to her*...then i had her lay down and i put the birds right aganist her face...and said 'easy!" again...and she would not even look at those birds again...when i brought one by her face she averted her eyes and looked away from them....then we actually let go of the leash and let her walk around a bit...she totally avioded the chickens...now....will this work if i am not outside?...nope!

.....but..i think it was a step in the right direction... i hope..

I agree that you should really spend some time training the dog and as redhen mentioned try using then pinch collar. I have all of my german shepherds plus one of my next door neighbors dogs trained not to bother the birds. My dogs are schutzhund dogs with a high prey drive and they still manage to keep it in check around my birds.

Gots a question...... Does he do it when the other dogs are out there....kinda like "a game of chase" ? My rottie doesn't even look the chickens way, unless my boxer is out there and is starting a game of chase the chickens..then it is game on. Just wondering if he is by himself or if he has a partner incrime, so to speak....

my husband has tried to train the dog from DAY 1. We got him late, he was already 8 months old with bad habits. My husband rid him of those bad habits. Now hes gotten into chicken hunting... so dont tell me we didnt train him. And i NEVER said i was getting another dog. Please ASK QUESTIONS BEFORE YOU ASSUME THINGS

No he doesnt do it when the other dogs are out there. He follows me down to the coop and just watches. Before he killed the roosters, they would run around us and he would just sit still. He never snapped at them. When we arent around is when he goes down to the coops to hunt them. This all happened within 2 days. Today he will get chained. After that we will resume training with taking him to the coops on a leash

I just wanted to say I feel for you; our lab/chow rescue dog loves to chase the chickens, grab them by the necks, shake them and drop them at my feet. There are times I would love to post a dog for free ad but the truth is the dog's home is here and it is my job to keep my chickens protected. I do this with a fence and yes, my dog now wears a shock collar and I am not afraid to use it when it concerns the chickens.

We also have a golden lab that we got when he was 7 weeks old and was introduced to him the minute he was brought home and he is fine with them.

Good luck with your situation.
