I started my chicks on Countryside Naturals chick starter when I got them last week. Kinda early for an endorsement but the chicks seem to enjoy the feed and I have not lost any or had any problems. I just wish that I could buy it locally instead of ordering it online. I have not found anyone around me in Delaware or nearby in PA or Maryland that carries organic feed. There is a place in PA about 1 1/2 hours away that carries organic feed but I will really have to be able to justify that drive as I can only store so much feed. I called a local feed store to ask if they carry organic feed and they guy started ranting about how "organic is a dirty word to me". I gave up. Good luck with the feed. I'm thinking you are going to be glad that you got it.
I get an organic layer with similar ingredients from our local organic grass-fed cow-share dairy (shipped from Nebraska to them) for 29.00/50#, which my chickens love, do very well on, and I pick it up when I pick up my milk. So I think that what you've ordered looks like a good price except for the shipping charges if you can't buy it locally. This is a big challenge if you are trying to even break even on your eggs... but I want to support organic agriculture, and I want the eggs that I and my family eat to be the best possible, the healthiest possible. We're "voting with our forks"... But you might look around for a local organic chicken/egg producer who is willing to sell organic feed...
Enggas, Blue Seal has organic but it is in Pellet form and my chicks wont eat it. 2 years ago a 50 lb bag was 17$. I wonder if Poulin Grains has it? Hmm I'm going to call them tomorrow, I think the closest to me is Newport though.
When I ordered it through Randall Burkey, I ordered some other things so I don't know how much the shipping was for just the 50# bag of chick starter. I don't think it was $21 though. It is crazy but I want to feed organic and there is no place to get it locally that I have found. I am not opposed to driving 1 1/2 hours to get food but I have had a mouse problem in my shed and can store only what I can fit in my feed bins. Between the chicken feed and bird seed, I have seven bins in my shed. The mice get into everything. Even unopened bags. I drive around with unopened bags of seed in my trunk just to keep it away from the mice.
I just checked on the Randall Burkey website. The chick starter is $38.99 for 50 lbs. The shipping is $14.99. $53.98 total. I know that it is nuts but I am going to keep doing it till I find it locally. I am also waiting to see the prices when McGeary Organics activates their "buy now" button on the website. That stuff is $76. for 50 lbs through MPC. Before shipping.
