On a whim I bought 30 to 40 quail, Jumbo browns and Egyptians, 8 week to 5months old. The person I got them from said they are laying 1 egg a day but should start laying anytime with light. I'm getting 2 eggs, I started YouTubing. This is not normal. Im going to get lighting today. I gave them chicken egg shells today they seemed to like and live black fly lava they also enjoyed.
My main question is one person said to feed wild bird layer mix, very high protein, but when I picked them up I was told absolutely not they would die. When it comes to Quail, I'm very knowledgeable about chickens. I bought very nice organic chicken layer crumble. Thank you.

I'm not sure why you would have been told that they would die with a high protein feed.
Quail need a high protein game bird feed. The 8 week old should probably still be on a 28%, or better, starter and transition to something a bit lower, 20 - 24%, at around 14 weeks, which is what they should get for the rest of their lives. Most feeds I've found with adequate protein don't have good calcium levels. I'd offer ground oyster shell on the side. I also give them egg shells, their own or from chicken, to make sure they're getting enough calcium. The hens will eat what they need and the roosters will pretty much ignore it.
They will absolutely adore the fly larvae, live or freeze dried, but that, and all other treats, should be kept to less than 10% of their diet since they are quite high in fat.
Regarding the reduced egg laying, it's as @sourland stated. Any change in environment will put quail off of laying for a while. They typically prefer at least 14 hours of light, too. Provide that and relatively stable living arrangements, and they will probably start laying again in a week or two.
