I am sorry for your loss.

My neighbor has just gone thru the same thing. She has a Bullmastiff that lost 5 puppies(they were stillborn) and then she laid on 2 others. She does still have 3 babies that are doing great. The Bullmastiff is a young girl with her first litter.

Sometimes when young dogs don't really know what to do, they will lay on the pups, probably thinking that they are protecting them.

There was nothing for you to blame yourself about. I believe things happen for a reason. Maybe the pup was sick, maybe not. It really doesn't matter now because you cannot change the outcome. Just don't beat yourself up. I have lost many dogs over the years, and I actually made myself sick with the "what ifs" or "should haves". Let the incident go. Concentrate on Brutus and the rest of your family.
