I recently lost my Barred Rock Hen

Chicken Sympathy.jpg

So sorry to hear of your loss. I hope fond memories bring some comfort :hugs

In my experience with a small flock, they definitely do appear to mourn a loss. Not the same way we do, but I have definitely seen changes in the flock atmosphere immediately following a loss. However, they also bounce back pretty quickly.

For this amount of time to have passed, I think the non egg laying is probably more likely environmental, weather etc.

:welcome
Sorry for your loss. I think the others are not laying right now, as stated above, due to environmental conditions. A change in the flock dynamics can throw them off for a bit, too, but they do adjust pretty quickly. As far as your rooster goes, he may have sensed that she was old, weak, and therefore a potential threat to the flock. I believe it's animal instinct to run off the old and weak to keep the flock (or herd, depending on the animal) strong. It's hard to accept, but even chickens can be brutal to any that are sick.

Should you get another Barred Rock? You're the only one who can decide that. They are pretty birds and generally good layers, I think. You may want to experiment with other breeds. Either way, I hope you can find a replacement that brings you joy.

Sorry for your loss. I would definitely get another Barred Rock if you liked the breed. The first year we had chickens, we picked out a cute d'Uccle hen and named her 'Dolly.' After her death, we were looking around for d'Uccles but all of our attempts at owning them again came to a failure. Now we have one, named 'Polly' of course. She is very sweet but I never feel that she 'replaced' anyone, only contributed to our little flock as an amazing new addition.

Sorry to hear of your tragic loss...I have two barred rocks, Helga and Gretel. I love them very much, eventhough they are very different personalities. Let a little time go by, try another barred rock. She won't replace Dot, but maybe she can be just as special in her own way.
Thank you. I just miss her

She was just so sweet. Miss her dearly. She helped me do everything in the garden. I am afraid that the others will associate another Barred Rock with Dot and exile that one as well. She liked her food lol

Truly, I believe Dot was exiled because of her age and the rooster sensed that there may have been something else going on, too. Frankly, he was doing what his instincts told him to do - keeping the flock strong.

You did make me think of something else, though. If you decide to get another chicken or two, you will want to read everything you can on integration. Even when done "right" it can appear ugly, so if you would have a hard time seeing a chicken being "picked on", I would suggest not getting another one. If you do, get at least two from the same place so you don't have one alone.
